After helping his team win the 2021 Finals, Jordan Poole was thought to be locked in with the Warriors for years. But just months after raising the trophy, they signed Poole to an extension that they came to regret when JP had a major drop-off the following season.

Things got so bad, Poole was traded over the summer for 38-year-old Chris Paul. While most fans and experts were confused over the trade, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. expressed remorse over his decision to break up with the young sharpshooter.

“Honestly, in a lot of ways, it was an easy move because I felt it would make our team better, and it gave us a decent amount of flexibility going forward, so to me it wasn’t that tough,” Dunleavy told Monte Poole and Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. “…To have an opportunity to address some needs and clear up some financial relief, for me, honestly, didn’t lose much sleep over that one.”

For, for all his flaws, was still a 20-point-per-game scorer for the Warriors and gave them another perimeter threat besides Steph and Klay. At his best, he became a star for Golden State, but now he’s exiled after being the scapegoat for a failed season.

Are Warriors Better Off Without Poole?

Swapping Poole for CP3 comes with positives and negatives, but the Warriors themselves don’t feel any regret about making the move. In fact, Mike Dunleavy Jr. believes it was the best move his team made this summer.

“I think the biggest thing really is just financially we’re in a position where we had to make some decisions,” Dunleavy said, via The Athletic. “I think we were able to make a decision where we could free some of that while also still being highly competitive and having a chance to win a championship. It just ended up having to be a decision we had to make, and so be it.”

Only time will tell how this trade goes down in the history books, but there is no question that the Warriors did what they felt was necessary, and you can’t blame them for doing that.
