The 2022-23 NBA season came to an end for the Golden State Warriors on Friday as they lost Game 6 to the Los Angeles Lakers to get eliminated from the playoffs.
Klay Thompson put in an absolutely horrific showing in the loss and shortly after the game, The Athletic reported that the team would want him to accept a pay cut if he is to sign an extension in the summer.
“Thompson is extension eligible this summer. He’s making $43.2 million on the final year of his deal next season. If he’s to extend with the Warriors this summer, the expectation is he’d have to accept a paycut, as Andrew Wiggins did last summer. “
Andrew Wiggins signed a four-year, $109 million extension last year and one can certainly make the case he could have got a lot more than that. It isn’t clear whether Thompson would agree to this, however, as a report stated earlier this year that he expects a max contract. Klay averaged 21.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 2.4 APG this season while shooting 41.2% from beyond the arc and it would appear he feels his play merits the max.
Klay Thompson Struggled Massively Against The Lakers
Thompson only had 8 points on 3-19 shooting from the field in Game 6 and that was a big reason why they lost here. Klay started the series well, averaging 27.5 PPG in the first two games but the last four saw him put up just 10.5 PPG. A lot of the focus in this series was on Jordan Poole’s struggles, but one could argue Klay was even worse, considering this was just Poole’s second playoff run.
If Klay had played better and adequately supported Stephen Curry, the outcome of this series could have been quite different. His future is now in doubt and if he refuses to take less money, then the Warriors might trade him this offseason.
