Trae Young is one of the premier point guards in the NBA, showing a proven ability to score and playmaker with the best players in the league.

In the 2023 Playoffs, we are seeing Young struggle mightily, just one year after his disaster against the Miami Heat in 2022. ESPN analyst Zach Lowe tore into Young for his inability to play off-ball with Dejounte Murray and his lack of defensive presence.

“Trae Young is doing nothing off the ball as usual when Dejounte Murray has the ball, and of course, he’s being hunted just mercilessly on defense. Mercilessly. In every possible way. Wherever Trae is, find him… He just offers up no resistance and a part of that is just that physically, he’s kinda slight compared to those guys. If he has to have multiple efforts on the same play… He’s got one effort in him, and that’s it. Then the play just devolves into someone on Boston getting an open shot.”

The Boston Celtics have done a great job of ensuring Young isn’t a major factor in the games. He is currently averaging 20.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds through two games on 35.0% shooting and 5.0 turnovers per game. These are really ugly numbers, and Trae may come under serious fire if the Hawks get swept.

Trae Young Looking Shaky In Atlanta

It seems Trae’s journey with Atlanta is headed for a very premature ending. A report of the Hawks’ front office exploring trades for Trae recently came out. If he plays like this, the Hawks may want to move on from him and maximize what they can get for a player like him to build around their current core.

It’s been a troubling year in Atlanta that has seen major shifts in the front office, roster, and even coaching. The one thing that’s been mostly a constant is Young, but even that may change if this playoff run ends in disaster for the franchise.
