Gregg Popovich, 74, is all set to man the sidelines as the San Antonio Spurs head coach. And he has a reason up his sleeve.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein: “I expect Popovich to be back on the Spurs’ bench next season and believe even more strongly that he won’t make any firm decisions about his future until after the draft lottery in mid-May.”

Stein further added that the prospect of the Spurs landing rising phenom Victor Wembanyama could be what enticed Coach Pop to make a return. “One suspects that Pop, after all, might have some interest in coaching Monsieur Wemby in the event that the Spurs, for the third time in franchise history, win the lottery.”

Per the latest reports, the Spurs are considered frontrunners to have Wembanyama in their ranks. The team is 20-58 at the time of writing and is one of the teams with the worst records in the league. The Houston Rockets are (19-60) in the West, and the Detroit Pistons (16-62) in the East are the other two at the bottom of the standings.

It’s a known fact that Coach Pop can bring the best out of the players in his outfit, and should his rebuilding Spurs land the French superstar who’s been doing some scintillating feats on the court, San Antonio can surely be one of the teams giving other franchises a run for their money.

Gregg Popovich Gets Real On Coaching Young Guns

Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich, and his Spurs may not have won the NBA championship in some time, but the veteran coach has still stuck around.

Over the years, he’s moved from coaching superstars to budding young players and explained the transition

According to San Antonio Express’ Tom Orsborn, “Pop said coaching kids rather than greats has been “exciting in a different way.” But he said there are nights when he says to himself, ‘What the hell am I doing here? Do I need to do this?’ Then he goes to practice, sees the kids “fired up” and thinks, “I wouldn’t trade it.”

The Spurs don’t have a lot to show for this season, save for some of their players providing glimpses of promise. Maybe the likes of Wembanyama will provide the much-needed spark, and under Coach Pop’s tutelage, the boy dubbed as the next superstar could lead San Antonio to the promised land.
