Tyrese Maxey has not been selected to play in the 2025 All-Star Game and while you wouldn’t blame him for being a bit upset, he is happy. Maxey was asked about his thoughts on not making the team in his press conference following the Philadelphia 76ers‘ 137-134 loss to the Denver Nuggets and he’s delighted for those who made it.
“I’m happy actually because I have a lot of connection with the people that made it,” Maxey said. “I just start down the list, Darius Garland, I’m so happy he made it. He deserves it, man. He had a lot of adversity last year that he went through and overcame. Helped lead his team to the one seed, so happy for him.
“Cade (Cunningham) is from Dallas, played against him a lot when I was younger, so extremely happy for him,” Maxey added. “First-time All-Star, making Dallas look really good. Tyler Herro, former Kentucky guard. Everybody is deserving. That doesn’t upset me at all. I’m more focused on trying to help this team win and get better.”
Class personified as always. You’d wish more players would carry themselves the way Maxey does. As stated earlier, the 24-year-old would have had a right to be upset about being snubbed.
Maxey, who was an All-Star in 2024, is averaging 27.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game for the 76ers in 2024-25. He is the league’s sixth-leading scorer and is a big reason why his team hasn’t bottomed out despite Joel Embiid and Paul George missing a lot of time due to injuries.
Despite Maxey’s best efforts, though, the 76ers are still just 19-28 on the season, and that poor record is the reason why he isn’t an All-Star. He’ll have plenty of opportunities to make the team in the future and could well make it next year.
Maxey isn’t looking too far ahead, though, and is focusing on helping his team win some games. The 76ers will be in action next when they take on the Boston Celtics at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday at 6 PM ET.
As for the names Maxey mentioned, they certainly deserved to be All-Stars this season. Darius Garland has led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a league-best 39-9 record while averaging 21.8 points 2.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game.
Cade Cunningham, meanwhile, is averaging 25.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 9.2 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game for a Detroit Pistons team that is 24-24 on the season. Cunningham has led a stunning Pistons revival this season and it’s great to see him get rewarded for it.
Last but not least, Tyler Herro has kept the Miami Heat afloat with a 23-23 record amid all the Jimmy Butler drama. Herro is averaging 24.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game while shooting 40.0% from beyond the arc and has rightfully been rewarded with a spot on the team.
Garland, Cunningham, and Herro join Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jaylen Brown, Pascal Siakam, Damian Lillard, and Evan Mobley as All-Stars from the East.
