The 2024-25 NBA season is nearly upon us and we have an idea of which superstars will continue to be at the top of their games but 10 players could take another level to become bonafide All-Stars soon enough. There are some big names you will recognize but there are a handful that still need to prove they can reach that next level and they probably will.

1. Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama’s rookie campaign in 2023-24 was a revelation. Despite the usual learning curve for a first-year player, Wembanyama established himself as one of the league’s premier shot-blockers and a versatile scoring threat. Averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game while finishing second in DPOY voting, he was a nightly highlight reel, impressing with his fluidity for a 7’4″ big man. In the 2024-25 season, his comfort level with the NBA’s physicality and speed is expected to skyrocket, allowing him to assert himself even more on both ends of the floor.

The key for Wembanyama is to refine his offensive game, particularly his three-point shooting and post-up ability. If he can improve his shooting percentages from beyond the arc and the mid-range while adding muscle to handle bigger centers down low, he could be an unstoppable force. As the San Antonio Spurs continue to build around him, look for Wembanyama to be in the conversation for his first All-Star selection, potentially becoming the face of the franchise and a pillar of the NBA’s future.

2. Chet Holmgren

Chet Holmgren

After missing the entirety of his rookie season, Chet Holmgren showcased his potential in the 2023-24 season, averaging close to a double-double with 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game. His defensive instincts and ability to stretch the floor make him a unique talent in the modern NBA. Entering his second year, Holmgren is poised to make an even bigger impact, particularly as he builds chemistry with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. The Oklahoma City Thunder are loaded with young talent, and Holmgren’s versatility could be the glue that binds it all together.

Holmgren’s All-Star candidacy hinges on his ability to stay healthy and add strength to withstand the rigors of an 82-game season. If he can remain on the floor and continue to improve his offensive repertoire, particularly his face-up game and three-point shooting, Holmgren could emerge as a two-way star. The combination of shot-blocking prowess and a developing offensive arsenal should position him well for his first All-Star nod.

3. Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray

Jamal Murray’s journey to potential All-Star status is different from many others on this list. Murray has been on the cusp for years, especially after his standout performances during the Nuggets’ playoff runs. In the 2023-24 season, Murray averaged 21.2 points and 6.5 assists per game, showing he can be a consistent second star next to Nikola Jokic. His scoring ability, combined with his knack for clutch performances, makes him a prime candidate to break into the All-Star ranks in 2024-25.

For Murray, it’s about maintaining his health and continuing to elevate his playmaking. If he can push his assist numbers closer to 8 per game while maintaining his efficiency from three-point range (42.5%) and mid-range, he will become one of the most complete guards in the Western Conference. With the Nuggets looking to win a second NBA title, Murray’s potential leap to an All-Star is pivotal to their continued success.

4. Alperen Sengun

Alperen Sengun

Alperen Sengun has developed into one of the more promising young big men in the league. The Turkish center made significant strides in the 2023-24 season, averaging 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. His unique skill set as a passer from the post and his ability to score with a variety of moves make him a matchup nightmare. As the Rockets continue to develop their young core, Sengun’s growth will be a focal point, especially with his ability to serve as a hub in both half-court and transition offense.

To make the All-Star jump, Sengun needs to improve his defensive positioning and rim protection while continuing to develop a reliable three-point shot. His natural basketball IQ is already high, but by becoming a better defensive anchor and spreading the floor more consistently, he could transform into a versatile big man capable of making an All-Star impact in 2024-25.

5. Jalen Green

Jalen Green

Jalen Green is entering a critical juncture in his career. The high-flying guard has shown flashes of brilliance, especially as a scorer. In 2023-24, he averaged 19.6 points per game but struggled with efficiency and shot selection at times. The upcoming season is his opportunity to not just be a volume scorer but also a more well-rounded player. With the Rockets looking to develop a cohesive unit, Green’s ability to improve his decision-making and defensive intensity will be under the microscope.

If Green can increase his shooting percentages—particularly from beyond the arc—and become more of a playmaker, his scoring prowess combined with better all-around contributions could make him a dynamic guard in the Western Conference. A refined game on both ends would likely push him into All-Star consideration for the first time in his young career.

6. Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga’s growth in Golden State has been a slow burn, but the Warriors are patient with his development. The 2023-24 season saw Kuminga average 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in a breakout role, often showing his defensive potential and athleticism. Heading into the 2024-25 season, Kuminga’s role is expected to expand as the Warriors potentially shift towards a younger core. His ability to defend multiple positions, score in transition, and hit the occasional three makes him a tantalizing prospect.

For Kuminga to become an All-Star, he will need to develop a consistent jump shot and better decision-making when attacking the basket. If he can harness his raw talent into a more polished offensive game while continuing to be a defensive force, he could emerge as one of the breakout stars of the season, filling a critical role following Klay Thompson’s departure in the summer.

7. Cade Cunningham

Cade Cunningham

Cade Cunningham, the former No. 1 overall pick, has the toolkit to be a star. Despite injuries hampering his sophomore season, Cunningham managed to showcase his ability as a lead guard, averaging around 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. His size, court vision, and scoring touch make him an ideal candidate to break through in 2024-25. The Pistons have surrounded him with complementary talent, and Cunningham’s playmaking and leadership will be critical for Detroit’s success.

The key to Cunningham’s All-Star leap will be his shooting efficiency, particularly from deep. If he can improve his three-point percentage and cut down on turnovers, he could easily jump to 24+ points and 8 assists per game. As the Pistons rise from the depths of the Eastern Conference, Cunningham has the potential to become their All-Star-caliber leader.

8. Jalen Williams

Oklahoma City Thunder star Jalen Williams (8) makes a play for his team at the Paycom Center.

Jalen Williams’ rapid rise in Oklahoma City has been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2023-24 season. The versatile wing averaged 19.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game last season, often showing his ability to impact the game on both ends. Williams’ natural feel for the game, combined with his defensive tenacity, positions him well for a potential leap to All-Star status in the 2024-25 season, especially as the Thunder continue to mature as a team.

For Williams, the next step is refining his offensive game to become a consistent 20+ point scorer. Improving his three-point shooting and shot creation off the dribble will be essential. If he can take on more playmaking duties while maintaining his defensive edge, Williams could easily see his name among the All-Star reserves in 2024-25.

9. Brandon Miller

Brandon Miller

As a high lottery pick, Brandon Miller’s first season came with both promise and growing pains. Averaging 17.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his rookie campaign, Miller showed flashes of his scoring ability, especially from beyond the arc. However, his consistency and defensive impact are areas in need of development. The Charlotte Hornets view Miller as a key part of their future, and a strong sophomore season could cement that belief.

Miller’s All-Star potential in 2024-25 will depend on his ability to become a more reliable scorer and a better defender. If he can develop a mid-range game and learn to use his size effectively on both ends of the court, Miller could elevate his game to another level, potentially making him one of the more surprising All-Star candidates of the year.

10. Jalen Johnson

Jalen Johnson, Atlanta Hawks

Jalen Johnson’s development with the Atlanta Hawks has been gradual but promising. The 6’8″ forward took strides in 2023-24, averaging 16.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while displaying impressive athleticism and defensive versatility. Johnson’s potential as a two-way player with the ability to handle the ball and make plays is intriguing. As he earns more playing time, his role could expand, making him a sleeper candidate for an All-Star leap.

Johnson needs to improve his three-point shooting and become a more consistent offensive threat. If he can diversify his offensive game while continuing to be a defensive stopper, the Hawks could rely on him more heavily, allowing him to put up the numbers necessary for All-Star consideration. His growth could be the x-factor for Atlanta’s aspirations in the 2024-25 season.
