Jaylen Brown has always felt like he has never gotten the respect he deserves for how well he has played over the years for the Boston Celtics. In the recently released third episode of All In Celtics, Brown had a message for those who continue to not give him his due credit and respect.
“For various reasons, I feel like I don’t get the credit or respect that I have earned, and I’m at the point of my life where I just don’t — I don’t give a f***, you know? I might never get it, and I’m okay with that,” Brown said. “I am who I am, I do what I do and I believe in what I believe in. So the ones who with me, let’s rock and roll, and the ones who aren’t, can kiss my a**.”
That is certainly the right mindset to have. It’s not hard to see why Brown thinks he doesn’t get the credit and respect he deserves. Despite playing a pivotal role in the Celtics finishing with a league-best 64-18 record this season, the 27-year-old didn’t make any of the All-NBA teams.
Brown averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game this season, and shot 49.9% from the field, but it wasn’t deemed enough. It certainly bothered him and Brown stated that players half as talented as him get praised and anointed.
To his credit, the three-time All-Star didn’t let that disappointment negatively affect his game. Brown shone in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers, as he averaged 29.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game.
Brown’s play was a big reason the Celtics swept the Pacers and for once he got some credit too, winning Eastern Conference Finals MVP. It was quite the change from a year ago when he had been heavily criticized for his poor play against the Miami Heat on the same stage.
Brown gained some redemption with his performances this year, but the job isn’t done just yet. He would know better than most that all this praise that he has gotten will go away if he doesn’t deliver in the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.
Jaylen Brown Says These Celtics Are Different From Their Previous Iterations
Since Brown arrived in Boston as the third pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, the Celtics have been one of the dominant forces in the Eastern Conference, but have never been able to get over the line and win it all. Despite their success this season, doubts remain regarding this team due to their past, but Brown explained why the Celtics are a different team in the 2023-24 season.
“We feel like we’re a different team than we were last year and the year before that,” said Brown via Bobby Krivitsky of Sports Illustrated. “I know everybody wants to continue to kind of pigeonhole us to what’s happened in the past, but we’ve had a different team every single year.”
“Different coaches,” Brown continued. We’ve had like three coaches in the last five years, and still, people want to just make it seem like it’s the same, it’s the same, it’s the same. Time has gone by, experience has been gained, and I think we are ready to put our best foot forward.”
Not only have the coaches changed and the players gained more experience, but some key additions have been made too. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were acquired in the hopes that they would help the Celtics get over the line. Will they? Well, time will tell.
