Kyle Kuzma Says His Team “Disrespected The Game” After Losing To Shorthanded Grizzlies Team

Kyle Kuzma explains how loss to the Grizzlies was "disrespectful" to the game.

In the aftermath of a brutal defeat at the hands of an unrecognizable Grizzlies team, Wizards star Kyle Kuzma was brutally honest about how much the loss stung. Labeling the performance as “disrespect,” Kuzma couldn’t help but reveal his level of frustration after one of the worst losses of the season.

“We disrespected the game,” Kyle Kuzma said, via Josh Robbins of The Athletic. “We disrespected ourselves… It just boils down to professionalism and giving a f— a little bit,” Kuzma said. “And tonight, we just didn’t. Anybody (on the Grizzlies) could go score. Anybody could lay the ball in. We were playing selfishly on both ends. Just wasn’t good tonight from all of us.”

The Wizards came into Tuesday’s game with a record of 11-53 on the season. But even with expectations at an all-time low, the Wizards were still favored to get a win against the 13th-place Grizzlies who were missing 13 of their 18 rotation players for the contest.

Kuzma held his own in the game with 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists but he has become ground zero for trolls online since posting his infamous line on X: “At this point it’s like “don’t be that team,” relating to the Detroit Pistons during their historic losing streak.

Now, his Wizards are the biggest laughing stock of the league as they sit below the Pistons in the standings and alone as the worst team in the NBA this season. Their loss to Memphis this week is just the latest blemish on their disastrous season so far and Kuzma can do nothing but sit by and watch knowing he had a chance to potentially leave this disaster.

Kuzma Wanted To Stay In D.C.

As bad as things may seem in D.C., it should be noted that Kyle Kuzma decided to stay there even when he had the chance to leave. In July of 2023, he re-signed with the Wizards on a multi-year deal worth $102 million.

As recently as a few months ago, Kuzma had the chance to leave the Wizards again and secure a move to Dallas. All he had to do was approve a trade to the Mavericks, which was reportedly already in the works.

As the sorry goes, Kuzma spurned the opportunity and decided to double down on his commitment to the Wizards. It was a twist that nobody saw coming and while Kuzma himself has not implied a change of heart, one has to wonder if he’s feeling any kind of regret over his decision.

Alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irvng, Kuzma might have had a chance to compete in the playoffs again for the first time since leaving the Lakers. Instead, he’s on the worst team in the league right now and struggling to find any hope for the future ahead.

This summer, the work will be cut out for the team GM Will Dwakins but it’s hard for things to get much worse than they are now, with no stars, no chance for a title, and no direction for the future. One way or another, Kyle Kuzma will be the key to their success going forward and it’s clear that he’s fired about their trajectory right now.
