In a chat with Taylor Rooks, NBA All-Star Trae Young revealed his honest opinion of the ongoing trade rumors in Atlanta. According to Trae, while he is still committed to the Hawks, his first priority is about winning, wherever that may be.
“Some of the best players ever have been traded, so who am I to be feeling mad or unwanted or feeling a certain way? If you don’t want me then okay then, somebody else will.”
When asked straight-up if he expects to be back with the Hawks next season, Young didn’t answer for sure one way or the other, but he did reaffirm his desire to take care of business and win in the place he’s at.
“Hopefully,” said Trae. “I coulda went to Kentucky, I coulda went to Kansas but I chose to be different and went to Oklahoma. They’ve never won a championship in Atlanta. Me getting drafted there felt like a match made in heaven. This is something I wanna do, I can defeat the odds here, too. My whole vision and my whole goal is to be here… but who knows? It’s year six now…”
Trae was originally set to go to the Dallas Mavericks before a draft day trade saw him re-routed to the Southeast. Since his arrival, the Hawks have been working to build a proper team around their star, but the results haven’t been great so far, and Young has been unable to find a long-term partner to run the team with.
Aside from a Conference Finals appearance in 2021, the Hawks have been painfully mediocre in the Trae Young era and fans are growing increasingly eager for something to break the cycle. But despite the team’s struggles, and a series of trade rumors for months, Trae remains committed to the Hawks and he’s going to give it his all for them unless the situation changes.
The Los Angeles Lakers Are Planning Aggressive Pursuit Of Hawks Star
With averages of 26.4 points, 10.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game this season, Trae Young is easily a top-five point guard in the game and it’s no wonder why a multitude of teams have expressed interest in acquiring his services.
Among the most likely candidates are the Los Angeles Lakers, who have long searched for a true star in the backcourt. D’Angelo Russell has played well recently and his recent string of hot shooting has definitely earned him some favor in the front office.
Even so, Trae Young is an upgrade in almost every way and the Lakers wouldn’t hesitate to make the deal if Young was made available. As one of the league’s best ball-handlers and pure-scoring guards, Trae would provide massive floor spacing that could allow easier shot opportunities for LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
At the very least, as a 3x All-Star who is still in his prime, the Lakers would be getting a proven and established point guard who is capable of carrying an offense on any given night.
For now, Young is still off limits until his future with the Hawks is determined but every GM in the league is monitoring the situation right now as the 2024 offseason subtly approaches.
