Sydney Sweeney has finally made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut, but it was a bit of a mixed bag. One of the many skits on the episode was titled “Air Bud” and it featured Rochelle (Sweeney) as the head cheerleader. Upon being told about a new basketball star at their school, she immediately gets interested in dating him.
“Wait, there’s a new star basketball player and I’m not dating him? What’s his name,” she asked.
It turned out that the star was a dog called Air Bud. Sweeney then headed over to flirt with the animal but was reminded by a fellow student that it was just a dog.
“Whatever Tyler, you had your shot with me and you blew it,” she said. “I gave you a chance to change and you refused.”
The skit ends with Sweeney finding out that the dog has a girlfriend, which greatly upsets her. It is the trope of the hot cheerleader trying to get together with the big sports star, but fans didn’t like it all that much.
One felt this skit would have been better if a dog wrote it, “This sketch would have been better if it was written by a dog.”
A fan wondered whether the writers were on strike, “Were the writers on strike this week?”
One fan said the dog was the only savior here, “The cute dog was the only savior of this episode.”
A fan was weirded out by the skit, “This is kinda weird.”
One fan defended the skit and said it’s supposed to be like this, “It’s weird people are so weirded out by this… it’s supposed to be like this.”
The skit is of course, in reference to the Air Bud franchise, but it didn’t end up being a very popular one. Sweeney’s monologue, however, did prove to be somewhat of a hit.
