In a chat with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Anthony Edwards revealed where he thinks he stacks up against other top young players. According to Edwards, he’s better than both Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, two leading candidates for MVP this season.
“How do you feel like you measure up against those two,” asked Stephen A. “I feel like I’m the better player, 100 percent,” replied Edwards.
When it comes to up-and-coming young stars, there may be nobody better than Doncic and Shai, who are both leading their teams to impressive runs this season. While Edwards isn’t considered on that same level by most fans and analysts, he clearly considers himself among the best and it’s hard not to blame him.
This season, with averages of 26.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game on 47.1% shooting, Edwards has been one of the best guards in the league. Currently, he ranks 12th in points per game this season and is leading the way offensively for a Timberwolves team that is currently at the top of the West.
Before anyone takes Edwards or the Wolves seriously as a threat, they’ll have to prove they can win when it matters the most and break a long cycle of playoff disappointment. But the same can also be said for Luka and Shai, who have yet to make the Finals once in their career. This year, the door is open for one of them to take their rightful place as the face of the league but it remains to be seen if any of them are even able or willing to accept that role.

At 22 years old, Anthony Edwards is off to a pretty good start to his NBA career. Still, he’s got a lot to prove before he can call himself the next NBA superstar. For starters, getting past the first round would be a huge step for the Timberwolves and only then can they even really think about making a Finals run.
As the main powerhouse behind Minnesota’s red-hot play, Edwards deserves a lot of credit for his role in this miraculous season. But more than his play on the court, it’s his hustle and grit that has so many people sold on his potential.
In a recent chat with the media, Kevin Durant tapped Edwards as the next in line after he, LeBron, and Steph eventually retire. NBA legend Kevin Garnet went so far as to compare the young guard to 1984 Michael Jordan.
Needless to say, the hype is real for Anthony Edwards and there is a strong sense that this is just the beginning of a Hall of Fame career. As a guy who can do it all on the court (jump, dunk, shoot) Edwards has all the makings of a legend and now all he has to do is start winning something to show for it.
This season is arguably his best chance yet of having a breakthrough but it will be no easy feat to get out of the West, especially with Luka and Shai in the way. For Edwards, he’s just going to keep the status quo for as long as possible until he gets the chance to prove that he can win big in the postseason.
