They may not be the greatest of friends now, but there was a time when Michael Jordan gifted Scottie Pippen a set of golf clubs, although the latter revealed the true reason behind it later on.

Speaking on ESPN and Netflix’s ‘The Last Dance’, the forward explained why Jordan gave him a set of clubs.

“Michael was such a superstar in the game of basketball, and he was bigger than any superstar that any sport had ever had, it wasn’t like he was any average guy and like let’s go have lunch. It’s different.”

He further added:

“My rookie year, he gave me a pair of golf clubs.”

To which the producer responded: “That’s a nice thing to do, to give a rookie a set of golf clubs.”

“He was trying to lure me in so he could take all my money,” Pippen chuckled.

Chances are that Pippen could be wrong. But then, there are well-documented stories about Jordan and his affinity for gambling, so there’s always that possibility that he may have indeed looked to make a more lucrative return on investment on the golf clubs.

Despite The Closeness On The Hardwood, Scottie Pippen And Michael Jordan Did Not Have A Close Relationship

On the floor, there was no doubt that Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were the perfect duo. Pippen was the player taking the weight off his teammate. He did the grunt work on both ends of the floor and was as good a threat as Jordan was.

However, the success on-court was limited to just that. By his own admission, Pippen said he and Jordan didn’t share the same sort of relationship outside the game.

“Michael was bigger than the game, you know. Even my initial arrival to Chicago he was a big, iconic figure for the NBA,” the forward explained. “So, we never really had that off-the-court relationship. Michael had his power and control. He established that years before I got there.”

Fast forward to the present day, Pippen has been taking shots at Jordan in abundance, and with the whole Larsa Pippen-Marcus Jordan narrative that’s fast gaining traction almost every day, that beef will only get murkier.

Why Does Scottie Pippen Hate Michael Jordan?

The reason behind Scottie Pippen’s hate towards Michael Jordan: He didn’t like how he and the team were portrayed in ‘The Last Dance’ In his book, Unguarded, 33 minced no words when he called out the Chicago Bulls legend.

“They glorified Michael Jordan while not giving nearly enough praise to me and my proud teammates. Michael deserved a large portion of the blame. The producers had granted him editorial control of the final product. The doc couldn’t have been released otherwise. He was the leading man and the director.”

In another interview, Pippen even went on to claim that he told Jordan that he “wasn’t too pleased” with the series. “He accepted it,” he added. “He said, ‘Hey, you’re right.’ That was pretty much it.”

But all said, there were no changes made to the show that became a global blockbuster docuseries, and Pippen has carried that hate to date. There’s no telling whether the two will mend fences at some stage. It would be nice if they did. After all, they did create history on the floor as players. The hug-and-make-up would cap off their decorated careers even perfectly.
