- Victor Wembanyama is arguably the most hyped-up rookie since LeBron James
- Former NBA star Tracy McGrady explains why too much hype could have adverse effects on Wembanyama
- T-Mac wants the 19-year-old to develop in peace
Victor Wembanyama is yet to play his first game in the NBA. But the 19-year-old is already burdened with the responsibility of becoming one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Sure, Wembanyama is 7’5″ and has a skill set of a guard and a forward. But according to NBA legend Tracy McGrady, over-hyping the French phenom will do more good than harm to his potential career.
“The hype around this kid is too much for me and I’m not sayin’ it because he doesn’t deserve it, but let’s let this kid develop and see what he’s going to be,” McGrady said on Scoop B Radio podcast. “Y’all talking about the greatest player of all time and this and that, like c’mon man. We gotta chill out with that. We don’t know what this kid is going to be.
“I do know that he’s going to be well prepared, he’s going to get the best advice that he possibly could get from anybody because he’s surrounded by greatness — Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and so in that sense, he’s going to be prepared for anything that he’s about to endure but, let it play out man.”
Despite being in a perfect place to be mentored into a great player, McGrady stayed firm on his points about not knowing the potential of Wembanyama just yet.
“We don’t know how great this kid is going to be,” T-Mac added. “We just don’t know. This is the NBA, bro! He is going to be going up against some real dogs out here that are looking at that and is going to take offense to that, you know what I’m sayin’? By him coming over from France, and you think that he’s going to be the top dog?”
He concluded: “It’s going to be some guys over here on this soil that’s going to challenge that, so, let’s let this play out. It’s too much.”

Tracy McGrady previously mentioned that Victor Wembanyama has been drafted into the perfect franchise. He will be mentored by the likes of Gregg Popovich, David Robinson, and Tim Duncan.
But even after that, there’s no guarantee that he will pan out to be the huge superstar that everyone wants him to be. After all, the NBA is the greatest basketball league in the world. Wembanyama’s lanky frame is undoubtedly a weakness in his game and can be exploited by other teams to stop him.
Victor Wembanyama Will Soon Make His NBA Debut
Victor Wembanyama averaged 18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 4.0 blocks per game during the NBA Summer League.
But fans have been waiting for his official NBA debut. Well, as of now, the tentative debut date for Wembanyama is Oct. 25, 2023. The San Antonio Spurs are all set to face off against Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s Dallas Mavericks during their season opener.
Hopefully, Wembanyama will live up to the huge expectations set on him by the NBA community. Otherwise, it doesn’t take long for fans to label No. 1 overall picks as busts.
