Winning an NBA Championship is the ultimate goal for any team in the league. But what’s more important for winning a title? Offense or defense?

Well, Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant recently claimed offense is more important than defense to win NBA Championships. Many called out Kevin Durant for his comments, but former NBA player JJ Redick agreed with him.

“The adage maybe had some truth to it, at least a kernel of truth in prior generations of the NBA,” Redick said on a recent episode of The Old Man & the Three podcast. “I think the reality is right now you either need superhuman performances from your top players or you need an unstoppable offense to really win a championship. So I think there’s some truth to what KD had to say in terms of offense wins championships.”

Redick used the 2023 NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets, as an example to support his point. The Nuggets were 15th in the Defensive Rating for the 2022-23 season, while they were fifth in the Offensive Rating.

They simply had a better offense than defense and it helped them in winning their first NBA title in franchise history. Keeping that in mind, Durant and Redick’s theory may very well be true for the modern NBA.

The Phoenix Suns Are The Favorites To Win The 2024 NBA Championship

The Phoenix Suns made a blockbuster trade with the Washington Wizards to add Bradley Beal to the roster. Initially, it was believed that the Suns’ gutted their depth for star power.

However, after making some great moves in the offseason, the Suns have created a good roster. It aligns with their team owner Mat Ishbia’s goal of winning the 2024 NBA Championship.

“We are going to win at everything we do,” Ishbia said. “I don’t believe you accomplish anything by being average. That’s not who I am.”

The Suns have Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton as the stars of the franchise. On top of that, they have the likes of Bol Bol and Eric Gordon in the supporting cast. To be honest, the new-look Suns are looking like the clear favorites to win it all in the upcoming season.
