The San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick, and it’s safe to say that he’s been the most hyped NBA prospect since LeBron James.

Wembanyama’s arrival has been anticipated highly, and the NBA Summer League tickets have been sold out as fans are excited to see him play. He has already received a lot of love and support without having played in the NBA, and he knows what he needs to do to pay that back.

“I have a responsibility to all the young fans,” Wembanyama said, according to Jeff Maillet of The Athletic. “My best way to give back for all the love I’ve received is by winning rings.”

That is a big statement, it is not easy for even the greatest individual stars to win championships in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most successful organizations of the 2000s, so he can be confident in saying this, but it will take a lot more than just talent to back it up.

Wembanyama had a shaky start to life in the NBA, failing to perform too well in his first Summer League game. He scored nine points but made just two of his thirteen field goal attempts. He did get eight rebounds, five blocks, and three assists, though, showing flashes of his magnificent skill. Even if he can get there eventually, he’s currently fairly far away from a championship.

Victor Wembanyama Needs To Follow Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Advice About Patience

If Wembanyama wants to find true success, he needs to listen to one of the greatest big men of all time. Having had the privilege to speak with and receive advice from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar already, the French phenom now needs to put that wisdom into practice.

“Just be patient. Pick up what he can pick up as he goes along,” he said to ESPN’s Cassidy Hubbarth. “He’s not gonna get all at once, but he’s got a lot of potential. We’ll see what happens.”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won six NBA championships in his career, so he knows what he’s talking about. His legacy is the one Victor Wembanyama will be chasing but he needs to be patient and learn about the league before rings become a realistic possibility. If he does actually deliver and lead the Spurs to multiple rings, though, this might become one of the greatest rookie quotes of all time.
