There is a huge difference between the NBA today and what it was a few decades ago. The biggest difference that fans can notice is the abundance of superteams in the modern era. Many superstars have decided to join forces in order to find an easy way to win NBA Championships in the modern era.

But during the 1980s or the 1990s, that wasn’t the norm. The players didn’t have such huge freedom during free agency. More importantly, the superstars didn’t want to join forces either. Instead, they wanted to compete against each other. Michael Jordan famously said he would never call up Magic Johnson and Larry Bird to form a superteam with them.

Magic Johnson On Why He Never Formed A Superteam With Michael Jordan

The 1992 Dream Team was one of the most amazing teams ever formed in the history of basketball. The likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and many other NBA superstars played for Team USA to win the gold medal.

There are many amazing stories during the time these superstars played together for Team USA. Magic Johnson recently shared a hilarious story about how Michael Jordan pulled off a 360 dunk against David Robinson in a Dream Team practice. After that, Magic went on to explain why he never even thought about forming a superteam with Jordan.

“No, no, you know what, I wasn’t a guy like that. I never wanted to play with nobody but my dudes. I was good. I’ve always been a dude wherever I end up, that’s what I’m rolling with. Even pick-up games. I never tried to get all the name dudes. I tried to get dudes who wanted to play. I liked that underdog thing anyway. Come on, let’s go beat these dudes over here. And so that was always my mindset and I’m glad. But I would say this, that’s what makes sports special. Not, everybody joining each other. Go make it happen.”

If Magic and Michael ever joined forces in the NBA, it would have been an amazing sight for the fans. But at the same time, it would have impacted the overall competitiveness of the NBA. All things considered, fans will be glad that they never joined forces and gave us many memorable moments by playing against each other.
