Gregg Popovich is arguably the single-greatest coach in NBA history, with an incredible career that spans over 25 years. While we have coaches like Phil Jackson, who was unmatched at his peak, Popovich’s longevity in the league has been incredible. Despite the San Antonio Spurs being in a clear rebuild for the first time in Pop’s career, the coach is happier than ever.

People expected Pop to retire when the Spurs’ playoff window closed after 2019 but he’s stuck with the organization to oversee their rebuild. He openly told fans not to bet on them to win the title this year to start the season while reiterating his commitment to the team.

He had a classic Pop response when asked about retirement again today after their loss to the Brooklyn Nets.

I asked Spurs coach Gregg Popovich when he’d know it’s time to retire.

“That’s a good question. Retire next week, 6 years from now, or after the season, I don’t think about that stuff. I think the little voice in my head will tell me that’s enough.”

“That’s a good question. Retire next week, 6 years from now, or after the season, I don’t think about that stuff. I think the little voice in my head will tell me that’s enough. If I am tired of telling someone ‘why are you getting beat backdoor so much? Can you please stay in front of somebody? Maybe you want to touch him and block him out a little bit? Maybe when we take a shot you wanna run back over there with a little bit of effort? Instead of loafing. Get your ass in here’. When I stop wanting to do that, then I’ll retire.”

Popovich as a coach is truly unmatched and this answer was emblematic of who he has been his entire career. His recent. You can’t cheat effort in basketball, so you cannot cheat Gregg Popovich either.

Will Gregg Popovich See This Rebuild Out?

The 2023 Draft Lottery is gonna be crucial in determining whether Popovich has something to coach for in the next season. Getting Victor Wembanyama or even Scoot Henderson will give him a possible superstar-level player to mold and return the Spurs to contention before he steps away.

Whether the Spurs can actually win a title under Popovich again seems to be a no. Unless we see Popovich coach for at least 5-6 years more. Given how he’s been talking about his future it won’t surprise anybody, that’s for sure.
