Despite the best efforts from LeBron James (who turns 38 tomorrow), the Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the worst teams in the league this season.

Even before Anthony Davis went down, they were struggling to stay alive. Now, without AD for weeks, James is left on his own to attempt the impossible task of leading this Lakers team to wins.

While many fans were hoping for some kind of trade, those hopes were quickly extinguished after the latest report from Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times.

Internally, sources said, there’s been serious consideration given to riding out the season without making a major deal if they can’t find one that would make the team a realistic contender.

Thanks to Davis’ and James’ injuries, roster depth depleted from a deal for Russell Westbrook and a revolving supporting cast since his title with L.A., the Lakers’ level of competitiveness since winning the 2020 NBA championship has been uneven at best.

This season, while fully healthy, they went to Milwaukee and played a near-perfect game to beat the Bucks.

The report matches dozens of similar claims over the past few months. The truth is, unless the Lakers see a window to acquire a true big-name star, they are unlikely to make any trade at all.

Lakers Fans Riot After Latest Front-Office News

Unsurprisingly, Lakers fans let the front office have it for choosing to prioritize picks over making win-now moves.

Lakers fans have been unhappy since opening night, and it’s clear to see why. With an aging superstar and injury-prone big man as the centerpieces of the team, Pelinka failed to surround them with enough depth and talent to make them a respectable team. But in this position, without even their own draft pick to make up for losing game, the Lakers have nothing left to play for.

It remains to be seen if this Lakers team can turn things around. As bad as things look now, the return of Anthony Davis might still be enough to push them to a play-in spot in the West.

Regardless, however, the Lakers aren’t winning a title with his squad. If Pelinka is serious about keeping his promise to LeBron and keeping him in a competitive situation, he needs to seriously re-think his approach.
