It was basically a given that Ja Morant was going to be in some deep trouble with the NBA following his second gun incident last month.

Commissioner Adam Silver delivered an ominous update on the situation when he said the league hasn’t announced the punishment only because the Finals are going on. Now, Adrian Wojnarowski has spoken on the length of the suspension that Morant could be facing.

“Adam Silver was very intentional in his words last night,” Wojnarowski said. “It does not bode well for Ja Morant. Listen, I think when you start to look at possible lengths of suspension and that’s what we’re talking about. He’s going to be suspended. I think an interesting number to look at is 17. Because now the NBA at its disposal has a new rule that a player has to play 65 games in the regular season to be eligible for post-season awards. So, for Ja Morant, 17 games off the top immediately would make him, or 18 games, would make him ineligible for post-season awards… What you heard from Adam Silver last night is what a lot of people all around the league in Memphis, everywhere believe that no one’s going to be able to say this time, ‘Hey Adam, you went too lightly on Ja Morant.'”

(starts at 1:35 mark):

18 games would be the bare minimum it appears, as it would ensure Morant is not eligible for any NBA awards, with the 65-game requirement being in place from next season. Ja has already missed out on $39 million after he didn’t make any of the All-NBA teams this season and he looks set to lose a whole lot more.

Wojnarowski stating that no one would be able to say Silver went easy on Morant sounds quite ominous in itself. Silver had stated he was shocked after the second gun incident and it appears he is going to come down hard on Ja here.

The NBA Has To Come Down Hard On Ja Morant Here

Silver made a big mistake in being very lenient when it came to the first suspension, as Ja was only gone for eight games. If he had come down hard the first time, Morant might have learned his lesson, but he gave him the benefit of the doubt, and here we are now.

His defenders will point to the fact that Morant hasn’t broken any law and that is true, but he is walking down a dangerous path and someone has to save him from himself. Stephen A. Smith said people within NBA circles were worried Ja might not be alive in five years because of the environment he finds himself in. Some might find that to be a bit much, but whenever guns are involved, there is always the chance of things going horribly wrong.
