The era of Kobe Bryant’s dominance in the playoffs came to an end in the second round of the 2012 Western Conference Semifinals at the hands of the talented Oklahoma City Thunder led by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Bryant tried his best by posting 31.2 points per game which led all players in the series but there were more factors at play.

The Lakers were simply too old and could not keep up in the Western Conference with a rising team that had too much firepower including James Harden who came off the bench and won Sixth Man of the Year. The Lakers fell in five games and that would mark the last time Bryant would appear in the postseason in his illustrious career.

Kobe Bryant Was Loyal To The Lakers, Faced All-Time Great Competition

Overall, Kobe Bryant stayed with the Los Angeles Lakers his entire career and never once thought about joining other stars on other teams. As a youngster, in his first few seasons, Bryant was not quite ready to dominate the postseason and that is why the Lakers did not start winning championships until 2000 despite Shaquille O’Neal being a dominant force in the paint. Early on in Bryant’s career, he played against elite competition including Karl Malone and John Stockton who proved to be too experienced at that point.

Once Bryant came into his own, the Lakers managed to take care of elite competition including Gary Payton, Tim Duncan, Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Chris Webber, Ben Wallace, and Allen Iverson. These are all Hall of Famers who could win series on their own and proved to be historical foes for Bryant and the Lakers. Of course, the Lakers’ rivalry with the Boston Celtics was iconic due to the Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen. Once Bryant was older and his team was no longer as relevant, dealing with a prime Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki ended their run in the playoffs.

In total, Bryant played a total of 44 All-NBA stars in totality (players repeated in some years) during his entire postseason career. That is an incredible number of elite stars that were in Bryant’s way but did not deter him that much since the Lakers legend retired with five NBA titles to his name. Competing against the San Antonio Spurs dynasty at their peak and also dealing with the Big Three Boston Celtics and the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns was not easy but that only boosts Bryant’s legacy as an all-time great player.
