Russell Westbrook’s time with the Los Angeles Lakers is something both he and the franchise will want to forget in a hurry. His play declined a lot and he was blamed for many of the team’s failures, sometimes unfairly.

And now Russell Westbrook‘s former teammate, Austin Rivers, has spoken out in his defense. Rivers defended Westbrook’s performances on the Los Angeles Lakers while throwing some shade at the organization in an interview with ClutchPoints

“You know how that is over there on that team,” Rivers said. “They’re gonna find an answer and it ain’t gonna be some other people. It’s gonna be him. I think Russ was just a person at the wrong place at the wrong time and the wrong situation.

“He played well, the guy’s a first-ballot of Hall-of-Famer, they asked him to come off the bench, no problems, comes off the bench, has a good energy about it, good attitude about it, what else do y’all want from the man? They got a lot of things going wrong in terms of like why they weren’t winning before. It wasn’t just Russ.”

There have been others that felt like Russell Westbrook was scapegoated during his time with the Lakers. There is some truth to that, but considering his 0-3 start to life as a Clipper, it’s not looking too good for him at the moment. Not that Westbrook is worried, and even Rivers has given a measured take on his fit with his new team.

Austin Rivers Thinks Russell Westbrook Is A Natural Fit With The Clippers

Russell Westbrook joining the Los Angeles Clippers wasn’t something that people weren’t worried about, there were reports that the franchise wasn’t sure about the fit. But Rivers in the same interview claimed that it’s a natural fit for the former MVP, explaining how it works positionally for the Clippers.

“I think it’s a great fit, honestly,” said Rivers. “I like it. They got rid of a lot of guards. They got rid of Reggie and John and you add Russell, so they needed a point guard, it’s just a natural fit.”

Russell Westbrook’s had some good games individually, but the Clippers are on a 3-game losing streak. They will need to snap out of it soon, or the narratives will start bubbling up again. All said and done, it would be lovely to watch Russell Westbrook succeed with his new team after all he had to listen to during his stint with the Los Angeles Lakers.
