Bobby Portis Reveals How He Joined The Bucks After He Called Giannis Antetokounmpo

"Hey, yo Giannis. You don’t know me, bro. I don’t know you. But I promise I can help you win a championship," Portis told Antetokounmpo ahead of joining the Bucks.

Bobby Portis revealed how he joined the Milwaukee Bucks following his candid conversation with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Safe to say, the chat between the two worked and translated to the duo winning the NBA Championship.

“[I told my agent], what about Milwaukee, man?” Portis told JJ Redick on his Old Man and The Three podcast. “Do you have Giannis’ number or something? So I called him myself, and was like, ‘Hey, yo Giannis. You don’t know me, bro. I don’t know you. But I promise I can help you win a championship. And six months later, we won the championship. That’s one of the craziest things ever, bro.'”

And that set the tone for what would be an electric season for the Bucks. Portis proved his penchant for stepping up in big games when he dished out his career-best 22 points in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Atlanta Hawks. With Antetokounmpo sidelined, the onus was one sparkling performance, and the big man delivered.

Portis’ story left Redick impressed. “That is amazing. I actually got chills when you said that,” he replied.

The center’s hard work paid dividends as Milwaukee inked a four-year, $48.6 million deal by using his early bird rights. This season, Portis is averaging 13.7 points, 9,7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.

The Milwaukee Bucks Are The Team To Beat This Season

The Bucks are the only team in the entire league to have lost less than 20 games. Their 47-18 record in the East makes them one of the teams that are legitimate contenders to win the championship.

Their basketball has been consistent and clinical, with Antetokounmpo doing the bulk of the heavy lifting. The forward is averaging 31.2 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists this season.

Also playing their roles to perfection are Jrue Holiday (19.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 7.3 assists) and Brook Lopez (15.1 points, 6.6 boards, and 1.3 assists). However, it’s largely been an Antetokounmpo show thus far.

With the team, a sureshot to make the playoffs much rests on how their top 3 fare. While Antetokounmpo continues his MVP-caliber run, all that the rest of the unit needs to do is play simple and quality ball — and that will surely give them the best chance of hoisting another title.
