Dillon Brooks really made a name for himself this year, but not in the way Grizzlies fans would have hoped. Brooks’ antics on the court combined with his comments off the court made him one of the NBA’s biggest villains. But Brooks has been a controversial figure even prior to the NBA, during his days as a college player with the Oregon Ducks, with one incident even bothering legendary former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Dillon Brooks and the Oregon Ducks were handily defeating Duke, and Brooks took an unnecessary three-pointer in the closing seconds of the game. Coach K did not like Brooks taking the shot, as it is an unspoken rule that you don’t take big shots when the game is over. Coach K approached Brooks after the game, telling him, “You’re too good of a player to do that”, after which Brooks apologized for the shot.

Brooks has come a long way since his days in Oregon. Despite being a second-round pick, Brooks became a starter and key defender for the Memphis Grizzlies over the last few seasons. Brooks made up the young core of the Grizzlies that was considered very exciting among NBA fans.

However, over the course of this previous playoff run, Dillon Brooks talked a lot of trash to LeBron James and the Lakers, but his performances did nothing to back up what he was saying. Brooks averaged 10.5 points, shooting 31.2% from the field and 23.8% from the three-point line as the Grizzlies were knocked out by the Lakers in the first round.

Can Dillion Brooks Redeem Himself Next Year?

It was recently reported that Dillion Brooks would not be brought back to the Memphis Grizzlies ‘under any circumstances’ next season. The Grizzlies faced heavy criticism for scapegoating Dillon Brooks, making the loss against the Los Angeles Lakers his fault. While the Grizzlies were upset about how the report was perceived, they have not changed their mind about bringing Brooks back to the team next year.

Brooks is expected to have plenty of suitors in free agency, with the Miami Heat considered favorites to land him. The Grizzlies have their own concerns going forward, specifically as it pertains to Ja Morant. But Brooks will have an opportunity to earn some goodwill by playing well with the Miami Heat, a team revered for their strong culture and hard work on and off the court.
