Dillon Brooks is not in a good spot in his NBA career. After solidifying his place on a rising Grizzlies squad in recent years, his association with the team will end this summer.

Shams Charania confirmed that Brooks will not be coming back to Memphis under any circumstances this summer, a disconnect that Ramona Shelburne of ESPN believes was because Brooks asked for too much money.

“Ramona Shelburne just said Dillon Brooks wants $25 million/year and that is why the Grizzlies are parting ways with him.”

Dillon Brooks expecting $25 million may have been a little excessive. He could have come into the season with the hope of playing his value up to that dollar amount, given his steady success in the last few seasons, but that number wasn’t realistic after his struggles this season.

He averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists on 39.6% shooting from the field in the regular season and ended up averaging 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in the playoffs on 31.2% shooting. Talking too much to players like LeBron James and Draymond Green without being able to produce on the court seems to have been his death knell.

Where Could Dillon Brooks End Up This Summer?

With very few teams having cap space, Brooks is unlikely to get a strong contract offer from a contending team. Getting the MLE from a contending team may be his most realistic route, which allows him to contribute to a winning squad to rebuild his value.

Teams like the Houston Rockets could use someone like Brooks to ease their transition to competing, as the team has been in full tank mode for the last three seasons. A $10 million per year offer for three or four years may just be his best course of action, but even that offer is unlikely until Houston has more clarity about their future with the 2023 NBA Draft taking place first.
