- Mitchell’s status with the Cavs unclear after a disappointing season

- Mitchell to Knicks talks are heating up after the latest rumors
The Cleveland Cavaliers risked it all when they traded a farm of assets for young sharpshooter Donovan Mitchell. On paper, the move has more than paid off for the Cavs, who enjoyed historic success in last year’s NBA regular season. But the latest information from insider Brian Windhorst suggests that Mitchell’s time with the Cavs could be short-lived.
According to Windy, the 4x All-Star will not sign any contract extensions this summer, leaving the door open for his departure in free agency in 2025. “I do not expect Donovan Mitchell to sign an extension with the Cavaliers this summer, nor do I expect that to cause a major alarm,” reported Windhorst. “I expect him to go into next year. But the way that he handles discussing it is important.”
The Cavs don’t have to panic just yet, as they still have Mitchell locked up for a few more seasons. But if he goes into free agency without anything to show for his run in Cleveland, it could jeopardize everything they’ve been building there.
“On his own volition several times this summer, Giannis has basically made it known his future in Milwaukee is not assured,” said Windhorst. “The way Donovan Mitchell answers that question and explains his decision process will be very important for the Cavaliers, their fans and potentially other teams out there who may be interested in making a trade for Mitchell. My expectation is Mitchell will keep his options open.”
Young Cavs Must Prove Themselves
Initially, the Cavaliers looked like a real contender in the East. With the NBA’s top defense and an offense more than capable of keeping up, they stormed out of the gate on opening night and never looked back. Along the way, Mitchell blossomed into a superstar with season averages of 28.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game on 48.4% shooting.
Unfortunately, the Cavs failed to come together in the playoffs and it resulted in a massively disappointing series against the Knicks, where they lost in five games. At the end of it, several Cavs players admitted that they weren’t ready for the moment, but they don’t have long to get it together. With the element of surprise gone, the Cavs will be facing some big expectations next season as fans root for them to make amends for their shortcomings. As always, Mitchell will be key to their success, but if he is forced to carry the team on his own, it could be the final nail in the coffin for this future with the franchise.
The New York Knicks Are Lurking
When Mitchell hits free agency in a few years, we already know one team that will be in the mix: the New York Knicks. The Knicks have been showing their interest since before Mitchell even joined the Cavaliers and adding him to their star-studded lineup makes a lot of sense. While the price would be steep, an offer of RJ Barrett, Josh Hart, and multiple picks could get the job done.
For the Knicks, Mitchell is the type of grade-A superstar they’ve been seeking for ages now. As a 4x All-Star and All-NBA player, Mitchell is one of the best offensive guards in the NBA, which he demonstrated to perfection during his 71-point game last season. If he can bring even half of that energy to the Knicks, it may be enough to vault them into contender status in the East. According to some, the Knicks may already be at that level, even without Donovan Mitchell.
