Jaylen Brown had an extremely poor performance in the Boston Celtics’ seven-game Conference Finals loss to the Miami Heat, being unable to lead the team to success.
Jayson Tatum got hurt at the start of Game 7, which would’ve been when Brown steps up. Instead, he shot 8/23 in the game and only had 19 points as Boston lost by the same amount. He held himself accountable for his disappointing performance in the loss.
“I expected to win today and move on. That’s what my focus was on. That’s what my focus has been on. We failed. I failed. And it’s hard to think about anything else right now, to be honest. I’m going to cross that bridge when we get there.”
Jaylen Brown on his future: “I expected to win today and move on. That’s what my focus was on. That’s what my focus has been on. We failed. I failed. And it’s hard to think about anything else right now to be honest. I’m going to cross that bridge when we get there.”

Many fans have already discussed Brown being traded away, but rushing to conclusions like that could harm the franchise in the long term. There were a number of reasons Boston failed to take their incredibly talented squad to the NBA Finals, despite facing an eighth seed and coming back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the series up for a Game 7 at home.
Brown will be in heavy trade talks this summer and it won’t be surprising if Boston finds an offer they’re satisfied with, given Brown is a free agent in 2024 and this allows the Celtics to not lose him for nothing if they’re not willing to extend him. Jayson Tatum publicly supported a contract extension for Brown after this game.
The Boston Celtics Coaching Conundrum
The Celtics would’ve sacked Joe Mazzulla without a second thought after he admitted he lost the locker room when the team fell back 3-0. He did a great job in getting his guys in Games 4 and 5, but Game 6 almost led to their elimination before a miracle buzzer-beater from Derrick White. Now that he brought the series back to seven, conversations around his job won’t be as simple anymore.
The 34-year-old coach definitely has a lot to learn and a playoff beating from Erik Spoelstra will teach him a lot. The Celtics can’t bring in another coach at this point, given it’d be their fourth coach in four years.
Ideally, Brad Stevens steps back into the role like Pat Riley did for Miami in 2006 and coaches them for a final ride before they make major moves to accommodate for the new CBA rules kicking in the 2024 offseason.
