Joel Embiid Seemingly Calls Out Nikola Jokic For Downplaying MVP Race

Joel Embiid called BS on players who say they don't care about the MVP award, seemingly throwing shade at Nikola Jokic.

Joel Embiid has never been shy to express his opinion, especially when it comes to the MVP award. The Cameroonian-born player is close to winning this away, but he keeps making a case for himself.

Moreover, he called out those who say they don’t care about the award since everybody cares about the MVP.

“One thing I’ll say is that if people tell you they don’t care about it, they’re lying,” Embiid told Rachel Nichols recently. “That’s the best award you can get as a basketball player, it means a lot. But if I were to win it, it would validate all the work that I put in, that’s why I cared about it, because you put in so much work and if you get that recognition, it just validates that you didn’t waste your time. But like I said, if someone tells you that they don’t care, that’s bulls***.”

These comments could be taken as a shot at Nikola Jokic, who said last month that he doesn’t think about the MVP award anymore. The Serbian center has won the last two MVPs, yet he had a terrific 2022-23 NBA season.

Joel Embiid Has Pretty Much Secured The 2023 NBA MVP

However, after the last two weeks, Embiid seemingly captured this award, and nobody can change that. Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo were his biggest competition this season, with Giannis even claiming he’s been the MVP for the last five years, but right now, he’s a lock for the coveted award.

Embiid secured his second consecutive scoring title, averaging 33.1 points. He also posted 10.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in 66 matches this season. He shot 54.8% from the field and 85.7% from the free-throw line.

Some think this is a real photo finish for the MVP race, but seeing what he did in the past couple of weeks, it seems like the MVP award is going to the Embiid household.
