Josh Hart Was Shocked At The Bradley Beal Suns Trade: “They Didn’t Get A Single First-Round Pick?”

The Phoenix Suns have gotten an absolute bargain for one of the best scorers of this era, as they traded for former scoring champion Bradley Beal for a package centered around Chris Paul and Landry Shamet.

The trade included a first-round pick swap and second-round picks, but no unprotected picks heading Washington’s way, which blew the mind of Knicks’ forward Josh Hart.

“They didn’t get a single first-round pick?”

Beal’s price is extremely cut-rate, but there are multiple reasons for that. The contract Beal has is still payable over four more seasons and will cost the Suns $208 million over that time.

In addition, Beal retains his no-trade clause meaning the Suns can’t really trade him for positive value later as he’ll control his destiny. That same clause allowed the 29-year-old guard to pick the team he’ll go to and the package that would come his way, so the scales were tipped against the Wizards in a bad way

Should The Wizards Have Gotten A Better Return?

The Washington Wizards could have gotten a better return if they traded Beal in 2021, as they should have. After moving Russell Westbrook to the Lakers in the summer of 2021, the Wizards should have just moved Beal at the same time and have some other teams worry about extending him. They would have gotten more value for an expiring Beal than they did for a long-term contract Beal with a no-trade clause.

There wasn’t a feasible way for them to get more right now, especially with Beal coming off a down year. He averaged 23.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this season, as the Wizards didn’t even make the play-in tournament.

With Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis expected to leave as well, the Wizards can finally enter the rebuild they’ve been avoiding since John Wall got hurt in 2018.
