Karl-Anthony Towns is arguably one of the premier centers of the NBA, but there are things about his public perception that he does not like.

KAT was on Paul George’s podcast and they discussed the origin of the nicknames Towns has had as a player. This led to KAT openly showing his dislike for the nickname ‘Big Purr’ that has been given to him by fans in Minnesota.

“[Nikola Jokic] got ‘Joker’ and I got ‘KAT.’ Y’all think that’s funny? It was on November 15, 1995, at 8:30 PM in John F. Kennedy Hospital, my sister walked into that motherf***er and said ‘Karl-Anthony Towns’ and didn’t realize that will follow me for the rest of my f****ing life. I got called KAT in college because I was playing for the Wildcats, so it was convenient. Then I came to Minnesota and they decided to call me, ‘Big Purr,’ what the f*** is that?!”

‘Big Purr’ is definitely a weird nickname for a top-tier NBA player, but it makes perfect sense. When you have a 7-footer named KAT, feline-related nicknames about him are some of the easiest to come up with. Maybe he should see it as a sign of endearment instead of hating on the actual nickname, though he isn’t wrong to do so.

A Big Summer For Big Purr?

Karl-Anthony Towns is going to go through one of the most crucial offseasons of his career. After making the playoffs in consecutive years through the play-in tournament and failing to make an impact in the first round, the next season has to be a forward step for the Wolves.

The team has given up most of its assets already, putting the onus on players like Towns, Anthony Edwards, and Rudy Gobert to lead the team to success next season.

Towns will slowly start transitioning away from being the primary option for the Wolves with the emergence of Edwards. Nonetheless, he needs to be a ruthless scorer, whether it is through off-ball or on-ball opportunities. Improving his stamina and possibly adding some more muscle could be positive changes he can incorporate into his game to help the Wolves become genuine contenders in the West.
