• Kyrie Irving was reportedly angry after the Cavaliers won the 2016 title

• After embracing his family, Irving went to the locker room and didn’t celebrate alongside his teammates

• Irving was reportedly FaceTiming Kobe Bryant in the locker room

Kyrie Irving has always been complicated to understand for NBA fans and especially media members. The peak of that confusion came in 2016 after Kyrie and LeBron James overturned a 3-1 series deficit to win the championship.

Brian Windhorst reported after the win that Kyrie looked angry after the title win, choosing to FaceTime Kobe Bryant in the locker room instead of celebrating with his teammates.

“He won The Finals (in 2016 with the Cavs) and he was angry. He seriously won The Finals, and his father and sister came out to hug him and he was angry. He was mad, at that moment. And then, when he got to the locker room, while his teammates were celebrating, he FaceTimed Kobe (Bryant).”

Kyrie averaged 27.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in the 2016 Finals. He hit the series-winning shot in Game 7, but was largely considered secondary to LeBron James, who won Finals MVP and had one of the greatest individual series performances of all time

Unsurprisingly, Irving left Cleveland in 2017 to lead his own team outside of LeBron’s shadow. Kyrie is still looking to recapture the playoff success he enjoyed alongside LeBron.

Kyrie Irving’s Final Chance At Success

The skill with which Kyrie plays the game of basketball means teams will always hope they are the ones that can bring him back to his championship-winning self. The Celtics and Nets thought the same before failing, and the Mavericks are hopeful it works out with them.

Mark Cuban openly told Irving that he may not even make the Hall of Fame if he bounces to another team. He signed an extension in Dallas this summer and will hope to build on the strengths of his partnership with Luka Doncic, as the Mavs have spent the summer addressing the roster issues that plagued their season last year.

Irving joined Dallas in February 2023 and averaged 27.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 20 games.
