  • Irving was traded to the Mavs last season
  • Despite this, the Mavs failed to make the playoffs
  • Amidst massive scrutiny, Cuban defends Irving and his impact on the team

In a recent episode of The Pat Bev Podcast, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban stepped forward to defend Kyrie Irving’s contribution to the team despite the franchise’s failure to secure a spot in the 2023 NBA playoffs.

Cuban’s remarks shed light on the complex dynamics that shaped the Mavericks’ season, with a focus on the partnership between Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic:

“Lot of people don’t think it, you know. So when you look at last year, we had issues that had nothing to do with Kyrie or Luka playing together.”

“And we just didn’t have a team that was committed to the roles, right?”

Cuban drew attention to the statistical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the Kyrie-Luka duo when they played together. According to Cuban, the two players shared the court for around 900 possessions, resulting in an impressive 60% net effective field goal rate.

This performance ranked them among the top five combinations in the league. The owner emphasized the potential that the partnership showcased during their time on the floor together.

However, Cuban was quick to point out that the team’s struggles extended beyond the Kyrie-Luka pairing. Injuries and various challenges hindered the Mavericks’ performance throughout the season.

These factors, combined with a lack of team-wide commitment to specific roles, played a significant role in the team’s inability to secure a playoff spot.

While the playoffs eluded the Mavericks this time, Cuban’s defense of Kyrie Irving suggests a commitment to refining the team’s strategies and roster for a more successful future.

Charles Barkley Says Mavericks Should Have Traded Kyrie Irving

NBA Hall-of-Famer and 11-time All-Star Charles Barkley recently shared his candid thoughts on the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to re-sign Kyrie Irving.

During an appearance on “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” Barkley expressed his surprise at the Mavericks’ move and suggested that they should have explored a sign-and-trade option instead.

Barkley’s viewpoint is rooted in his belief that a sign-and-trade deal could have provided the Mavericks with a valuable opportunity to rebuild their team while potentially enhancing their roster dynamics.

He openly questioned the compatibility of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving as a pairing, indicating that he would have preferred to see the Mavericks gain assets through a trade involving Irving.

The idea of a sign-and-trade would have allowed the Mavericks to not only retain value from Irving’s departure but also potentially acquire pieces that could better complement Doncic’s playing style.

Barkley’s suggestion underscores his belief that roster synergy is crucial for a team’s success, and he appears to think that the Mavericks missed an opportunity in not exploring the sign-and-trade avenue.

While Barkley’s opinions are just that—opinions—the insights from a basketball legend like him often carry weight due to his extensive experience and understanding of the game.

Barkley’s comments have sparked conversations about the decision-making processes of NBA teams and the various approaches they can take to optimize their rosters.

The discourse around the Mavericks’ handling of Kyrie Irving’s contract and the potential trade scenarios suggested by Barkley and Simmons highlights the intricate and strategic nature of player transactions in the NBA.
