The NBA has lost a huge legend today, as Bill Russell sadly passed away at age 88. The 11-time NBA champion was still seen at arenas, bringing joy to fans with his jokes and good attitudes. Russell was beloved around the league, and even when he attended a Los Angeles Lakers game at the Purple and Gold arena, he was welcomed with open arms.

That’s how great he was and how much love and respect people had for him, which explains why so many fans, analysts, players, and more are mourning this loss. NBA fans had emotional reactions to this, NBA stars and other figures took to social media to show their respect to Bill, and this won’t stop happening.

The latest name to join the list is the widely considered GOAT, Michael Jordan, who issued a statement regarding Russell’s tragic death through his Charlotte Hornets. MJ sent a short but direct message, thanking Russell for his contribution to the game and society while showing the path for those who arrived in the association after him.

“Bill Russell was a pioneer – as a player, as a champion, as the NBA’s first Black head coach and as an activist. He paved the way and set an example for every Black player who came into the league after him, including me. The world has lost a legend. My condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.”

This is definitely a big loss for the league, as one of its biggest legends has left this world. Russell’s name is one of the biggest in NBA history and his impact goes beyond the court. He was more than just a center or a Boston Celtics icon, but also somebody who fought for the less fortunate and wanted to see some changes in American society.

He will be deeply missed and everything he did on and off the court will never be forgotten. Thank you for being such a great legend, Bill.
