Victor Wembanyama’s long-awaited debut for the San Antonio Spurs in the Summer League came on Friday night. The Frenchman did not have the best of games, however, finishing with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks while shooting just 2/13 from the field.

Some on social media were quick to label Wembanyama as a bust and Michael Porter Jr. spoke on the reaction to the Frenchman’s performance.

“Like yesterday, I felt for him because people want to talk about his performance in that game,” Porter said. “But he’s going to have so many amazing games… He had one bad game, and now people are talking a certain way about him.”

There was going to be some sort of overreaction one way or the other considering the incredible hype surrounding Wembanyama. Had he played well, there was going to be talk of him dominating the league as a rookie but the fact that he didn’t, meant it has gone all the way toward he could be a bust. He is going to be just fine, but it’ll take him a bit longer than what people expected, for him to become a dominant player in the league.

As for Wembanyama himself, he admitted he didn’t really know what he was doing on the court on his debut. He stated that he is still learning and added that he needs to work on his conditioning before the season starts.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Message To Victor Wembanyama

There have only been a few instances of a player coming into the league with this kind of hype and LeBron James was the last one. Another such individual was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who entered the NBA in 1969 after winning three straight national championships in college.

Kareem was in attendance for Wembanyama’s debut and his message for the Frenchman was a simple one, be patient. Abdul-Jabbar stated Wembanyama just needs to pick up what he can as time goes on and that he is not going to get everything all at once. He seems smart enough to understand that and the Spurs would be relaying that message to him as well.
