The 2020 bubble is going to stand as one of the most unique ways the NBA has ever conducted its playoffs, trying to salvage the 2019-20 season after COVID wrecked it.

The bubble’s unique circumstances often lead people to put an asterisk on the teams that participated. Marc Spears tried doing that on Brian Windhorts’s podcast by saying the Nuggets’ 3-1 comeback against the Clippers in the second round didn’t count.

“I don’t count the Bubble. The Clippers choked, and the Clippers gave them a free pass to the Western Conference Finals… Clippers choked, Brian (Windhorst). They were up 3 – 1. They wanted to go home. That’s not to say Jamal Murray wasn’t amazing. The Clippers should have won that series”

Delegitimizing the bubble is a practice that seems extremely dishonest. Initially, the concerns were about it being too easy because there are no crowds but Spears won’t count it because the Clippers couldn’t cope with the stress of living in that environment. There’s inconsistency with how people want to discredit the bubble.

Should The Bubble Playoffs Be Appreciated Or Not?

If we hail the mentality of some of the great championship teams in NBA history, being able to withstand the isolation of the bubble is something a team that was locked in to win a title would be able to do. Also, odd to say that they didn’t want to be there when they actively outplayed Denver to take a 3-1 lead.

If they had given up, they wouldn’t fight as hard to not be upset by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round or dominate the Nuggets for the start of the season. They choked and it definitely should be remembered for not being able to cope with that environment when other teams were doing so, even though players like Marcus Morris don’t count it either.

The Lakers notoriously wanted to leave the bubble after the killing of Jacob Blake, but were outvoted by other teams and made to stay. Well, they managed to leave that setting with a championship. Devaluing the unique struggles that teams faced in the bubble by saying it doesn’t count is not fair to the integrity of the sport.
