Cade Cunningham was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft and has slowly come into his own after a slow start to his life in the NBA. There have certainly been a lot of great flashes from the young point guard, and he has averaged 17.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 4.5 APG in the last 10 games, while also shooting 40.6% from beyond the arc during that time period.
Pistons legend Dave Bing was recently asked to comment on Cade Cunningham during the recent Nets-Pistons game. Bing claimed that Cunningham was going to be "an All-Star caliber player" but didn't think that he was someone "you build your team around".
I think he's starting to come into his own right now. We worried about him early on in terms of his shooting, but he's been playing very very well. So I think he’s going to be an All-Star caliber player, I don’t think he’s a guy you build your team around… we still gotta get that guy we don’t have it yet in my opinion. I also think our weakness is the backcourt we gotta get a good point guard.
All No. 1 picks are generally expected to become All-Star caliber players, and Cade Cunningham's recent play certainly suggests that he could reach that level in the future. Some have compared him to Brandon Roy. While a lot of people do expect Cade Cunningham to eventually surpass being an All-Star and become a superstar, it seems as though Dave Bing just isn't as high on him as others.
The Detroit Pistons have a solid young core right now, and while they're not winning much currently, they should be able to win more games after they develop some of their players. Hopefully, we see Cade Cunningham reach his potential, and he seems on track to do that.
