Dennis Rodman shared his experiences on the ‘Got Sole’ podcast about his time playing for the San Antonio Spurs, describing the city as “one of the most Bible-thumping cities in the world.” Known for his eccentric lifestyle and rebellious persona, Rodman’s time in San Antonio was particularly turbulent due to his unconventional behavior, which stood in stark contrast to the conservative values of the city.

“You know, making that transition from San Antonio to Chicago, a lot of people thought I was gay because I was crossdressing, wearing women’s clothes, doing this and that. But I didn’t give a damn. I was in San Antonio—imagine that, in San Antonio, the Bible-thumping city of the world.”

“I was going to gay clubs, doing Gay Pride events, and all that. The only reason they kept me around was because we were winning, right? We were winning, and that’s the only reason they kept me around. Then, once the ’95 season was over, they traded me to Chicago.” (22:59)

Rodman explained that his habit of crossdressing, attending gay clubs, and participating in Pride events during his time in San Antonio led many to question his sexuality. Despite the friction between his flamboyant lifestyle and the city’s more traditional mindset, Rodman noted that his on-court success allowed him to remain with the Spurs for a time.

Rodman’s tenure in San Antonio was marked by tension, both on and off the court. While his performances as a relentless rebounder helped the Spurs become contenders, his unpredictable behavior created significant friction within the organization. Ultimately, as Rodman recalled, the Spurs decided to trade him to the Chicago Bulls after the 1995 season.

Reflecting on the transition, Rodman expressed a sense of liberation upon leaving San Antonio. In Chicago, he found a more fitting environment where his individuality could shine, playing alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen to help the Bulls capture three consecutive NBA championships. His time with the Bulls cemented his legacy as one of the most dynamic and unpredictable players in NBA history.

Rodman’s reflections on his time in San Antonio highlight the cultural clash between his free-spirited nature and the conservative atmosphere of the city. Despite the challenges, Rodman embraced his identity and continued to thrive, proving that talent and authenticity could triumph in even the most unlikely settings.

Dennis Rodman On How He Got His Hair Dyed

Dennis Rodman, known for his bold and eccentric style, shared the story of how he first dyed his hair during an appearance on the Got Sole podcast. According to Rodman, it all started in San Antonio, a place he often recalls as being central to some of the most transformative moments in his life. Upon being traded to the Spurs, he found himself bored and in need of a new, attention-grabbing look, which led him to an unexpected hair transformation.

“It happened in San Antonio. That’s how crazy this whole story is about San Antonio. When I got traded there, I was dating this girl—her name was Kim, I think—she was the daughter of Mr. Hunt, the guy who owns Heinz ketchup.”

“So we went to the mall in San Antonio, and I said, ‘Dude, I’m bored right now. I need to do something really cool.’ Next thing you know, this big Mexican guy with long black hair and a silver streak walks out of a salon and whistles. I looked around and thought, ‘God damn, look at that guy!'”

“He said, ‘Come here,’ and I said, ‘What do you want?’ He said, ‘I want to dye your hair.’ Just like that. I said, ‘You do? All right, let’s do it.’ So I went in there, sat in the chair, and the first thing I did was fall asleep, man.”

“Next thing you know, he’s doing all this stuff to my hair. When I woke up, I didn’t even look at it. The girl was there, and she said, ‘Oh shit, look at that!’ I’m like, ‘Oh really? It looks great?’ I didn’t even ask him. She said, ‘Wow, boy, he did a job on you, Dennis.’ I said, ‘All right, great.’ So she said, ‘Let’s go to the movies.'”

“We went to the movies, and to make a long story short, out of all the movies on the planet, we happened to pick one in particular. We sat down, and I see Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes on the screen, and I’m like, ‘This is not funny, right?'”

“The next day, we had fan appreciation day in San Antonio—about 20,000 people there. I said something like, ‘Hey, I don’t give a damn what you guys think of me. You can hate me or love me, but I’ll tell you one thing: I’m going to get solid.’ I did that, and people just tripped out.”

“The whole place. My hair was white, and it was a mohawk. People around the world were tripping out, saying, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this in the NBA!’ It was something.” (25:40)

Rodman was dating a woman named Kim, the daughter of the owner of Heinz ketchup, when the couple decided to take a trip to a mall in San Antonio. While there, Rodman noticed a man with long black hair and a striking silver streak. Intrigued, he approached the man, who boldly offered to dye Rodman’s hair. Without much hesitation, Rodman agreed, and what followed became the beginning of his signature style.

Rodman humorously described how he fell asleep in the salon chair, completely trusting the stylist’s vision. When he finally woke up, he didn’t even bother checking the results himself. It was Kim’s reaction that first gave him a sense of what had been done.

The real moment of revelation came later when Dennis Rodman attended a fan appreciation day in San Antonio, sporting his newly dyed white mohawk. In a statement that perfectly embodied his rebellious spirit,

His daring hair choice marked the beginning of Rodman’s evolving persona, one that would continue to surprise and entertain fans throughout his NBA career.  It was a defining moment, symbolizing his break from the norm and his fearless embrace of individuality.
