IShowSpeed’s tour of South Asia took him to the Philippines recently. During his visit, he decided to play a pick-up game with a young fan. During the game, the fan surprised him, crossing him up with an ankle-breaking move to drive to the basket for an easy bucket. Speed hilariously blamed the floor being slippery for his fall.

It was a surprising moment to see Speed, who despite his popularity as one of the biggest streamers in the world, is one hell of an athlete, who has been amazing fans with feats of athleticism, get crossed up by a young fan in the Philippines. But perhaps the young fan’s skill is a testament to the country’s growing basketball culture.

IShowSpeed is a big fan of the NBA and recently helped host the ImPaulsive podcast with Logan Paul when Kevin Durant was a guest on the show, with Durant even poking fun at him during the show.

The country’s national team is represented by one NBA star – Jordan Clarkson. And recently, another NBA star in the form of Kyle Kuzma has spoken about his willingness to play for the Philippines should Team USA not want to provide him the opportunity to play international basketball.

Perhaps we will see the country make a big impact at the next FIBA World Cup or the Olympics in the future. But it is great for the global basketball scene that another country is getting represented by some of the best players in the world. It will only help the growth of the sport across the globe.

Can The Philippines Be The Next Great Basketball Story?

The Philippines partook in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where they played as one of the home countries. However, it was a disappointing run, as they finished fourth in their group, not being able to win a single game during the tournament. And their efforts to qualify for the Olympics ended disastrously.

Once again, the Philippines, despite having a win under their column, were not able to advance to the Olympic tournament final. They will have to try once again to land themselves on the international stage in a high-profile spot. With a host of new players willing to represent them, they might be able to get there.

Perhaps the Philippines could have a performance like South Sudan, who shocked the world at the 2024 Paris Olympics, not just by qualifying, but by defeating Puerto Rico, a team that is actually much stronger than their own on paper.

With players like Jordan Clarkson, Kyle Kuzma, Justin Brownlee, Karl Quaimbao, Kai Sotto and Jamie Malonzo, the future of Philippino basketball could be very bright.

The growth of basketball across the world is actually quite exciting. Seeing players from all over the world find success at the highest stage is great for the sport, and helps basketball expand further into its position as one of the most popular sports in the world.
