The Dallas Mavericks traded franchise cornerstone and local hero Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers over the weekend in an inexplicable deal. Doncic took the Mavericks to the Finals just a few months ago and is considered a top-three player in the NBA, but the Mavericks were done with his weight and conditioning issues.
Getting traded from the franchise you expected to retire on has to be a major blow. Former Maverick Chandler Parsons revealed on ‘Run It Back’ that Doncic bought a $15 million family home in Dallas and cried when he was told he had been traded.
“This dude just bought a $15 million house, just closed on it last week in Dallas. Apparently, he cried when he found out.”
Parsons also called for people to stop treating players cruelly when they decide to leave a franchise given how the Mavericks just treated Luka.
“This is your everything, he took you to the Finals last year. I just find this to be extreme BS and I think the narrative needs to change like when players make decisions like this, to understand them and what’s better for their future, families, and lives. Nico did this because he thinks it’s better for the Mavs. It’s not a consistent thing. We always get hung up on the player leaving like he’s a bad guy.”

The Doncic family was settled in Dallas, with Luka’s longtime partner Annamaria Goltes giving birth to their first child together in December 2023. They were planning on establishing roots and raising her in Dallas, similar to how Dirk Nowitzki made Dallas his home city outside Germany.
Nowitzki still lives in Dallas and is a local icon for his 21-year stint with the Mavericks, although Doncic will now never be able to scale those heights. It might have been easier for fans if Luka demanded a trade or even left on bad terms, but the fact that he seemed to be just as shocked and hurt as all the fans of the franchise has somehow made this situation worse.
The Mavericks were done with the Luka Doncic era and decided to trade him coldly. Whether this hurts the Mavs long-term perception as a player-friendly organization remains to be seen, but the ‘loyalty’ aspect of the Mavericks organization seems to have died with the new regime taking over,
