The Dallas Mavericks have officially assigned Anthony Davis to their G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends, as he ramps up for a potential return to the NBA. The 10-time All-Star has been sidelined since February 8, when he suffered a left adductor strain in his debut game for the Mavericks against the Houston Rockets

While many expected Davis to be shut down for the season, his return to action suggests the Mavericks are still contemplating a late push for the play-in tournament despite their injury-riddled roster.

The Mavericks currently sit 10th in the Western Conference with a 33-36 record, holding onto the final play-in spot. However, their situation has become increasingly precarious. They have only seven healthy players, and if more injuries pile up, they could be forced to forfeit games

The loss of Kyrie Irving to an ACL tear was a devastating blow, and there were reports that Davis might also be shut down to preserve his health for next season.

With Oklahoma City Thunder—the best team in the West—likely waiting as a first-round opponent, Dallas faces an uphill battle even if they manage to qualify for the postseason. The Thunder’s length, depth, and athleticism pose a matchup nightmare for a shorthanded Mavericks squad.

However, Davis’ return presents two possibilities: either he plays a few games before being shut down or he leads one final push to secure a spot in the play-in tournament.

Despite his limited time in a Mavericks jersey, Davis made an instant impact in his lone appearance. Against the Rockets, he posted a dominant stat line of 26 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks before exiting with the injury. His performance showcased why Dallas traded for him in the blockbuster Luka Doncic deal, even though the trade has been widely criticized by fans.

The assignment to the G-League suggests Davis is progressing well in his rehab, but Dallas has yet to announce an official return date. The Mavericks’ front office is reportedly divided on whether to play him this season, especially with Kyrie Irving out and the team struggling to stay competitive.

For Davis, however, this return is personal. He wants to prove to the Mavericks’ fanbase that he was not just a consolation prize in the Luka Doncic trade. His leadership and presence in the paint could provide a much-needed boost, especially considering Dallas’ lack of size and rebounding depth.

If Davis does return, it remains to be seen how effective he can be. The Mavericks have lost eight of their last nine games, and their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread. Regardless of what happens, Davis’ return will have significant implications for both the short-term and long-term future of the franchise.
