After 15 years in the NBA, Stephen Curry has already been immortalized as a legend of the game. Even when he retires a few years down the road, Curry plans to continue adding to his legacy as an owner/governor of his very own team.
“For me, that’s definitely on the table,” said Curry via CNBC. “I think I could do a pretty good job of helping sustain how great the NBA is right now and what it takes to run a championship organization. I know I have a lot more to accomplish on the court before I move into other roles in the league… The investment that it takes to create that first-class experience so we feel taken care of allows us to hoop at a high level.”
For Curry, he still has unfinished business to handle on the court before he thinks about taking on a role as owner. Even as a 4x champion, 2x MVP, and 10x All-Star, Curry has an insatiable desire to win and he’s fully committed to chasing the title in the 2024-25 campaign.
Whenever his career is done, whether next summer or in five years, there’s no doubt that he will maintain a heavy presence in the league. If he’s not a frequent face in the media, he will surely take on a role in ownership — and with career earnings stretching beyond $300 million, he has earned enough money to make a serious bid for his own team. The biggest question now is which team it will be.
As a Warriors legend, it’s possible that he could look to purchase a small stake in his current team so that he could continue to be a part of the show after his playing days are done. He has developed a deep relationship with the front office and personnel, including majority owner Joe Lacob. As a final parting gift, I can see Lacob offering Curry a piece of the franchise that he helped to make so valuable.
Another option could be the Charlotte Hornets. While Curry isn’t typically associated with the Hornets, his father played there during his NBA career and Stephen grew up there when he was coming up in the league. Now that Michael Jordan has severed his ties to the franchise, it’s an opportunity for Curry to return to his childhood city and help bring the Hornets some long-overdue success.
If not a current franchise, Curry may have to look to expansion teams to achieve his ownership dreams. It’s no secret, after all, that the NBA plans to add more organizations to the fold and we could see the creation of several new teams before the turn of the decade. According to Adam Silver and other league sources, the primary candidates for an NBA expansion team are Seattle, Las Vegas, and Mexico City.
Las Vegas is a particularly interesting option given that LeBron James has also indicated a heavy interest in starting a team there. After they enhanced their friendship on Team USA this summer, the possibility is higher than ever that they might team up and put a joint pitch to own the future expansion team in Las Vegas.
Ultimately, only time will tell how Curry’s post-retirement plans pan out but as a 4x champion and a basketball legend, he knows what it takes to be successful in this business. if he gets the chance to run a team of his own one day, we can only guess that prosperity will follow given what we’ve seen from him over the past 15 years.
