Lakers Have No Plans To Trade LeBron James, They Want Him To Mentor Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers will not trade LeBron James because they want him to be Luka Doncic's mentor.

After the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the franchise is getting ready to welcome the All-Star to its team. According to Shams Charania, who spoke on NBA Today about the franchise’s future, the Lakers have no plans to trade LeBron James and actually want him to mentor Luka Doncic as their top star for years to come.

“Luka Doncic, for the next 10 years, is going to be the face of that Lakers organization. There’s a lot of questions right now; what is LeBron James’ future, and what is he thinking? There is not going to be a move for LeBron James out of Los Angeles right now, as far as everyone is concerned.”

“But the relationship between him and Luka Doncic is going to be something I keep an eye on. The Lakers want LeBron James to be a mentor of sorts, and help Luka Doncic continue to develop the right habits, on and off the court. I think we are going to see that play out over the coming days, weeks, and years.

The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off one of the biggest coups in NBA history by trading for Doncic. However, unlike many of their moves in the past, LeBron James had no idea about this trade. In fact, he found out after the move happened at a restaurant in New York. Richard Jefferson revealed to fans exactly how LeBron James reacted after finding out.

Nonetheless, it appears the Lakers don’t plan on moving LeBron James and want to build around him and Luka Doncic. Given how similarly ball-dominant their playing styles are, it will be very interesting to see how the two players gel on the court. However, James has shown in recent years his willingness to defer to another star player.

Lakers Want Luka To Learn From LeBron

The Los Angeles Lakers, according to Shams Charania, want LeBron James to be the shining example for Luka Doncic, whom the Lakers want to be the face of their franchise for the foreseeable future. They noted that Doncic has an admiration and respect for LeBron, and should follow suit very easily.

“This is Luka Doncic. He is 25 years old. Now he is going to be the face of the Lakers franchise, a franchise that has LeBron James on its roster. LeBron James, at the age of 40 years, year 22, is going to be able to mentor Luka Doncic in a lot of ways, give him so much wisdom to be able to take it to another level.”

“That’s someone Luka Doncic idolizes and has a lot of respect for. I never thought there would be a day where the Mavericks would trade Luka Doncic outside of him requesting to be traded… “

Given how the Mavericks have treated him on the way out, with GM Nico Harrison taking shots at his defensive ability, and not even keeping him in the loop about a trade, he will be motivated to get better and prove the franchise wrong.

Playing alongside LeBron James, a player who has been the most disciplined and focused star when it comes to his health, fitness, and conditioning could be the best thing for Luka Doncic, as he will understand what it takes to succeed in the NBA at the highest level possible.
