In most years, Scoot Henderson would have been in contention to be selected with the first pick of the NBA Draft, but with Victor Wembanyama also in his 2023 class, the best he can hope for is to be picked second.

Henderson seems to have accepted that too, as after a pre-draft workout with the Portland Trail Blazers, he confirmed he will only have one more.

“Think it’s one more in Charlotte,” Henderson said when asked how many more he plans to do.

There’s absolutely no chance the San Antonio Spurs select him over Wembanyama with the first pick, so it doesn’t really make sense to have a workout with them. Henderson is almost certainly going to be drafted either by the Charlotte Hornets at second or the Trail Blazers at third unless either of those teams trades their pick.

The Blazers Could Be Willing To Trade The Third Pick

While the Blazers got him in for this workout, they could potentially trade that pick. A report indicated they would be willing to use it to acquire someone like DeAndre Ayton in what would be a win-now move.

Henderson is a terrific prospect who averaged 16.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, and 0.5 BPG in the G League last season, but the chances of him being a key contributor right away are slim.

He would have a lot of value for rebuilding teams, though, and with the Blazers focused on building around Damian Lillard, they could get some very good assets for the pick. As for Henderson himself, he stated that he and Lillard could work well together, and if the Blazers were blown away by what they saw during this workout, they might decide against trading the pick.

All of this would be moot, of course, if the Hornets decide to draft him to form a formidable backcourt for the future with LaMelo Ball.
