It was absolute fun while it lasted, as the San Antonio Spurs are shutting down Victor Wembanyama for the rest of the Summer League.

Per ESPN’s sources, the rookie center who had a bounce-back game on Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers will officially not be taking part in the tournament.

Earlier, the French phenom had spoken about sitting down with coach Gregg Popovich to determine if he would continue playing in the Summer League.

“I know I got to talk with Pop,” Wembanyama said Sunday when asked if he was going to play more here. “I’m going to listen to what he’s going to say, but I’m ready to make any sacrifice for the team and give 100%.”

While his first game against the Charlotte Hornets was a damp squib where he shot 2-for-13 from the field, Wembanyama seemed at ease against the Blazers propping up 27 points showing that he was quick to acclimatize in the league.

The move would perhaps be to keep the No. 1 of his year’s 2023 NBA Draft fresh and healthy for the NBA. The grueling 82-game schedule will be tougher, and with the weight of expectations on Wembanyama, the idea for Coach Pop will be to get his ward in shape and game-ready.

“Like this past month, I think basketball wasn’t even 50% of my schedule,” Wembanyama said prior to the news of his being shut down. “I can’t stand it. I know it’s a special moment in my life, but I’m just glad it’s over honestly. I just want to hoop, workout, and lift.”
