Tyler Herro is one of the best young players in the league currently, and he is widely viewed as the favorite for the Sixth Man of the Year award. He is generally known as a great shot-creator and shooter. Currently, Tyler Herro is putting up 20.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and 3.8 APG on the season.
Prior to the start of the season, Tyler Herro compared himself to superstars such as Trae Young and Luka Doncic, claiming that his name “should be in that category”. There’s no doubt that his claim was met with a lot of controversy from fans.
“I feel like I’m in the same conversation as those guys, the young guys coming up in the league who can be All-Stars, superstars one day,” Herro said, as quoted by Heat Nation. “Luka [Doncic], Trae [Young], Ja [Morant], those guys like that. I feel like my name should be in that category, too.”
Udonis Haslem was one of the people who backed Tyler Herro and his confidence, and recently, he doubled down on the comparisons. When speaking to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Udonis Haslem claimed that Herro would be “just as good” if given the keys to his own team like Luka Doncic and Trae Young.
“We talk about guys that get to start and play 30-plus minutes and take 20-plus shots. And a guy that doesn’t start and plays in a more controlled system. Everybody eats here. The ball moves here. If you gave Tyler the opportunity you gave those guys, not saying he would be better than those guys, but he would be just as good. I see the talent and skill set of Tyler every day. I kind of know what I’m talking about. I’m proud of him. He understands all of this, the Sixth Man of the Year, is built around winning. If we’re not winning, none of that matters.”
Tyler Herro is obviously not a superstar-caliber player currently. However, he is still young and talented, and perhaps we’ll see him develop into a full-fledged star in the future. It’s certainly a possibility.
The Miami Heat are currently the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, and a large reason for that is Tyler Herro’s scoring. They’ll need him at his best if they are to make the NBA Finals, and hopefully, we see the Heat redeem themselves after their first-round exit last season.
