The Toronto Raptors shocked the world last season when they earned their first-ever Championship against the Golden State Warriors. In the months following, they lost their best player, Kawhi Leonard, and then shocked the world again by staying atop the Eastern Conference without him.
These past few seasons have been the best in Raptors’ history and while nobody is really giving them a chance to repeat as champions, a few moves could put them in a position to dominate their competition for years to come.
One such move could involve Goran Dragic of the Miami Heat who, according to Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report, could serve as a “trustworthy” backup to Lowry.
In this scenario, Toronto would need a trustworthy backup point guard who could handle duties on or off the ball.
Goran Dragic is Toronto’s man.
Dragic can’t expect anything close to the $19.2 million he’s collecting with the Heat this season, and the Raptors’ desire to keep the books clean for 2021 means he might also have to settle for a one-year deal and/or accept a partial guarantee on the second season. Toronto has to keep all of its powder dry for a run at Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The 34-year-old Slovenian guard is averaging 16 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds on 43% shooting and 37.7% shooting from beyond the arc for Miami this season.
He may not be the biggest name on the free-agent market this offseason, but Dragic can be a real difference-maker in the right environment and the Raptors could use every bit of the skills he provides.
