This NBA season has been all we could ask for and more. After a crazy and intense offseason that saw many superstar and star players switch teams, we have been given an NBA season filled with many highlights and storylines. One of the biggest storylines currently going on is looking at who should be the MVP of the league this season.
At the beginning of the season, it was looking as if Giannis was going to run away with the award but after a recent stretch of games, LeBron has added his name to the ballot. The quest for MVP is currently a race between the two and in today’s article, we will look at three reasons why Giannis Antetokounmpo is the Most Valuable Player this season.
1. The Milwaukee Bucks are the best team in the NBA
The Milwaukee Bucks have made countless moves to get to where they are right now. After firing Jason Kidd, they signed Mike Budenholzer to be their coach of the future and he integrated a system that has turned them into an extremely dominant team. Depending on if the NBA will finish out the rest of the season or not, the Bucks could become just the third team in NBA history to win 70 games in a season. Currently, they are 53-12 on the season, the best record in the league, and for them to win 70 games, they would have to win out for the rest of the season.
Factoring in players sitting out at the end of the season and their recent underwhelming play, the chances of this happening are slim to none but, if there is one thing that the Bucks have shown us this year, it’s that they can turn it up at any moment and it wouldn’t be surprising if they won their last 17 games, depending on if the regular season is played out or not.
2. Giannis is having a dominant and historic season
Giannis has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league and he still has a lot that he can improve on. This season, Giannis is putting up an amazing 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game on 54.7% from the field. Considering how this season is going, it looks as if he will be the first player in NBA history to average at least 29.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game in a season, according to Bball Ref.
To further show just how dominant he has been, he is only playing 30.9 minutes per game which would be the lowest of any player that has averaged at least 29 points per game in a season, according to Bball Ref. Looking at all of his statistics, it is no argument that Giannis is having one of the greatest seasons in NBA history.
3. Giannis and the Bucks are dominating without a second “star/superstar”
Looking at the other dominant teams in the league, most, if not all, have 2 stars/superstars on their rosters. The Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Clippers have Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Rockets have James Harden and Russell Westbrook, and, at full strength, the Nets have Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
Looking at the Bucks, after Giannis, they have Khris Middleton. Now, Khris Middleton is an amazing player and make no mistake, this is not a shot at him. In fact, he is having an uber-efficient season and, depending on if and how the season finishes out, he could become just the 5th player in NBA history, joining Larry Bird, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry, to average at least 20 points per game on 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the free-throw line.
Despite all of this though, Middleton has never been the number one option on a playoff team and he has never made an All-NBA team, as all of the other players listed above have. Instead of looking to add as many stars as possible, the Bucks have looked to fill out their role with savvy veterans that know how to play their role. This choice could come back to bite them but, as of now, it looks as if it was the right decision.
As it stands right now, barring anything unforeseen, Giannis should be the MVP this season. The combination of sheer dominance and team success makes it extremely difficult to pick against him and the scariest thing about it all is that he is only going to continue to get better.
