4 Moves The Dallas Mavericks Can Make To Become A Powerhouse Team

The Dallas Mavericks have been stuck on a mediocrity spiral over the last 5 years or so, entering a rebuilding process that’s slowly coming around and becoming one of the most promising projects in the league.

  • 4. Draft Michael Porter Jr
  • 3. Trade Wesley Matthews
  • 2. Offer Julius Randle Max Deal
  • 1. Offer DeMarcus Cousins Max Deal

Dirk Nowitzki is coming back for yet another season and there’s nothing Mark Cuban and Rick Carlisle would love more than giving him the chance to win another Championship before calling it a day.

So, after drafting Dennis Smith Jr the prior campaign, we believe that there’s still a bit of work to do in order to take the next step, so we’re going to let you know about the top 4 moves the Mavs need to do this offseason.

4. Draft Michael Porter Jr

Michael Porter Jr is the most intriguing player in the Draft and it’s not even close. With the Mavs entitled of the 5th overall pick, they should just go ahead and take him, especially if Mo Bamba is already gone as predicted.

Porter is such a high risk-high reward pickup for the Mavs, being considered by much as the most talented player in the Draft, a consistent scorer from all three level and a potential franchise player, although his back injury is a major concern for scouts.

3. Trade Wesley Matthews

Not so long ago, Wesley Matthews was considered to be one of the league’s top-notch 3 and D guard/forwards, but ever since leaving the Portland Trail Blazers, the veteran’s game has really taken a major hit.

Also, they still owe him over 18 million dollars for this upcoming campaign, and with Seth Curry set to come back after missing the season with an injury, there’s no point in keeping a 32-year-old veteran on a rebuilding team.

2. Offer Julius Randle Max Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are unlikely to match any high bids for Julius Randle this season, as they’re desperate to get rid of as much salary off their books as they can to offer Paul George and LeBron James max deals.

So, the Mavs should definitely pursue Randle to back up Dirk and even play at the 5 in some small ball sets, as the hustler made great strides this prior campaign and proved that he’s got what it takes to become a major force down low for years to come.

1. Offer DeMarcus Cousins Max Deal

And finally, they should definitely make a run at DeMarcus Cousins, who is rumored to leave the Pelicans after unfollowing the team on social media, even though he’s set to miss a portion of the campaign following his season-ending Achilles injury.

Dallas has been looking for a standout big man for years now and Boogie may be the missing piece they so desperately craved, as he’s been playing the best ball of his career ever since leaving the Kings. Also, a Dennis Smith Jr, Seth Curry, Michael Porter Jr, Dirk Nowitzki, DeMarcus Cousins starting 5 with Randle coming off the bench (but with more minutes than Dirk Nowitzki) would make this one a prime offensive squad.
