The Los Angeles Lakers returned to winning ways in this 2024-25 season with a 131-125 win over the Toronto Raptors on Friday. The Lakers came into this contest on a two-game losing streak and had Anthony Davis to thank for them improving to 4-2 on the campaign.
Davis had 38 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks on the night as he continued his strong start to the season. After the game, Lakers fans sang praises of their star big man on X.
“Anthony Davis is in MVP mode,” a fan wrote following yet another impressive showing from Davis.
“Anthony Davis is a beast, and he’s been the best Lakers player since he arrived,” a fan praised Davis and believes he’s been the best player on this time since his arrival.
“Back on the right track. Let’s Go,” a fan thought the Lakers are now back on track.
“Thank God we didn’t blow that,” a fan was relieved the Lakers didn’t blow the game after their great start.
“Great first half, more of that,” a fan loved the first half and wants to see more of that moving forward.
The Lakers seemed on course for a comfortable win when they led 43-19 after the first quarter. They were up by as many as 26 points at one stage in the first half but allowed the Raptors to come back in the contest with a poor third quarter. They lost that period 37-23 and were only up 99-88 entering the fourth.
The Lakers and Raptors then exchanged runs for much of the final period. The home team had a chance to make it a three-point game in the final minute, but Gradey Dick missed a three and that was that. Davis and Austin Reaves made no mistakes at the line and the Lakers held on to get their first win on the road this season.
While Davis ended up being the star of the show for the Lakers, you’d have thought early on that this night was going to be all about LeBron James. LeBron had 14 points in the first quarter alone and it looked like he was on his way to delivering another iconic performance in Toronto. That wasn’t to be, though.
James slowed down a bit after that hot start but still finished with 27 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and a steal. It wasn’t quite a vintage performance, but it was good enough to get the win. The Lakers will now look to make it back-to-back wins when they take on the lowly Detroit Pistons on Monday.
As for the Raptors, Dick and RJ Barrett put in excellent performances. Dick had a career-high 31 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Barrett, meanwhile, made it back-to-back 30-point games by finishing with 33 points, five rebounds, and 12 assists.
The Raptors have now dropped to 1-5 on the season, but I have been impressed by what I’ve seen from them after a blowout loss in their opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They came close to pulling off a stunning comeback win against the Lakers here and only narrowly lost in overtime to the Denver Nuggets earlier this week.
