LeBron James Opens Up On Having Bronny As A Teammate

LeBron James verged on getting emotional while looking ahead at having his son Bronny as his Los Angeles Lakers' teammate this season.

LeBron James has received a lot of criticism for wanting to make NBA history by sharing the court with his son, Bronny, on the Los Angeles Lakers this season. As the Lakers seem committed to developing Bronny, LeBron spoke to the Associated Press about teaming up with his son less than a week before the season, sharing his true thoughts on getting the opportunity to team up with his son.

“For a father, it means everything. It’s a special feeling, a different feeling, to work with him. When you go to work every day, you want to try to help each other. If it’s a bad day for him, you pick him up. … There are things we can do that don’t even need words. We can just look at each other and know.”

No matter what the critics say, we will witness a historic moment when Bronny and LeBron will share the court against the Minnesota Timberwolves to open the season, with Shams Charania already confirming that Bronny is expected to get minutes during their opening night fixture.

LeBron isn’t in the lineup for their preseason game against the Suns but was actively giving Bronny advice from the sidelines.

More than any on-court reason, LeBron did grapple with the potential death of his child last year when Bronny suffered his cardiac arrest before playing a minute of college basketball. Recovering from that and making it to the NBA is no easy feat, so the James family will be glad that their eldest son is in a position to fulfill his dreams despite a life-changing cardiac incident.

Despite the good vibes around the Lakers camp and the support being extended to Bronny, we are yet to see any decent production from the 55th pick in the Draft in preseason. Across four games, Bronny has averaged 1.0 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks on 2-16 shooting, not looking ready to play regular season minutes in the NBA.

Bronny will get his debut and a history-making moment alongside LeBron on the court but it doesn’t seem likely that Bronny will receive consistent minutes with the senior team in the regular season, likely spending a lot of time in the G League.

LeBron And Bronny Have Shared The Court In Preseason

Even though preseason isn’t tracked historically, the first moment LeBron and Bronny were teammates on an NBA court came during their preseason matchup against the Phoenix Suns, where the Lakers lost 114-118. LeBron was pleased with that opportunity, remarking after the game how special that moment was.

“Cool for the both of us and especially for our family, pretty cool… Definitely a moment that I will never forget… For a father, it means everything. For someone who didn’t have that growing up, to be able to have that influence on your kids, influence on your son, and be able to have moments with your son – and then ultimately to be able to work with your son, that’s one of the greatest things a father could ever hope or wish for, so it was pretty cool.”

Due to the difference in ability between the father-son duo, Bronny hasn’t played many other minutes next to LeBron due to them having entirely different rotations. They’ll share the court on opening night but it doesn’t look like we’ll have many James-to-James moments this season unless Bronny takes a sudden leap in ability and breaks into the Lakers’ rotation.
