Kevin Garnett spoke about playing against Hakeem Olajuwon during an episode of his podcast with Paul Pierce. He noted that Hakeem would trash-talk him with a level of sophistication that he wasn’t used to it. In fact, Olajuwon would use more layered and nuanced phrases to mess with Garnett, who couldn’t keep up with it.

“Dream [Olajuwon] used to talk sh*t but his talking sh*t was so sophisticated I couldn’t even [understand]. Coming from Chi-Town, right into the league – in Chi-Town, you got the little quick-backs. Dream used to hit you like ‘I am a man!… Don’t do that, I am a man’. You’re like ‘Alright Dream, my bad’…”

“I am hitting him with lateral movement. To this day, I don’t even have a response. ‘I’m finna test your lateral’. He comes out, ‘I’m finna test his lateral’ and throws his mouthpiece in. Test your lateral?… I’m like ‘Damn, now I need some more sophisticated sh*t. My sh*t ain’t hitting like his’. [He goes] ‘I am freezing him, he cannot do anything’. That was like classy sh*t talking.”

“Coming from Chi-Town, you got them little quick backs. Man, [Hakeem Olajuwon] used to hit your a*s with, ‘I am a man.’ Like, I don’t even know how to answer that.”

This is a hilarious story, and Hakeem Olajuwon might be one of the first players in NBA history to have gotten the better of Kevin Garnett when talking trash. Garnett is known as one of the most ruthless and savage trash talkers in NBA history, so for Olajuwon to leave him perplexed is a real accomplishment.

Olajuwon is from Nigeria, and English wasn’t his first language. So for him to rely on the more traditional way of speaking rather than slang and vernacular that American NBA players would be using during his playing days was definitely a challenge. But he didn’t let that stop him from sending a message to opposing players.

Kevin Garnett Would Trash Talk Anyone

Kevin Garnett’s reputation as one of the fiercest trash talkers in NBA history. Regardless of which player was in front of him, Garnett would not back down and talk trash to them. He recently told the story of how he disrespected Michael Jordan when he played against the Bulls in his rookie year.

Garnett often used his words to get under his opponents’ skin, and even intimidate him. KG recently told the story of how the Celtics used a Roman war cry to intimidate opposing teams before a game. This clearly worked as the Celtics went on to dominate the NBA en route to the 2008 NBA championship.

Garnett hasn’t let his retirement get in the way of his trash-talking. He recently called out the current generation of NBA stars, claiming that none of them would be able to compete with players from 20 years ago. This was in response to Anthony Edwards’ recent comments calling out players from the previous era.

KG’s trash-talking became the stuff of legends, with some players even fearing him and trying to avoid it. Steven Adams recently told the story of how he told Garnett that he doesn’t know English so he could avoid being on the receiving end of Garnett’s trash talk. Kevin Garnett truly earned his reputation as a trash talker.
